Inlaws situation...what do you think?

Just wanted some opinions on this situation, just let me know if I am over reacting ok but this has been annoying me and DH lately…..

DH’s Oldest brother got a house in Commack. Well they have been bugging us to go see it. It has gotten to the point where DH and I are ready to blow a fuse! Ok on the 4th of july weekend we were all at DH’s 2nd oldest brother’s house so while we were there the oldest one decided to show the house to my FIL and then to my SIL (DH’s sister) so my BIL. Ok fine, now my husband and his BIL wanted to go see it MY SIL (DH’s oldest brother’s wife” was like “oh well we really don’t want a lot of people going over there right now cuz the homeowners are still there”. Fine…so later on when we were all going home she goes to me “I’ll see you guys next Sunday” and I was confused and asked her what next Sunday was and she was like “oh you guys are gonna come see our new house”. But I told her we couldn’t go cuz we had a christening and when I told her that she gave me this surprised look (almost like she didn’t believe me or something) and was like “oh Rob didn’t tell me that you guys had a christening”. I just told her that he just forgot. You know how men are, we women always keep track of the parties we have to go to. DH is always asking me what parties we have coming up….LOL

So that was that and then DH’s oldest brother calls us during the week and wanted us to come over on a Friday night (two days before our cruise) DH told his brother that by the time I got home from work changed and left to come over we would get to his house by 7 and he doesn’t want to drive out to Commack just to spend 2 hours there and come back. So we offered to go the next day, which was the day before our trip and we had so much to do, but my SIL was like “no Saturday is not good for us because my BIL walter is coming over” (now mind you we have been at their house before when walter was there…so why couldn’t we go anyway…we know walter) So DH said to me “whatever…. we’ll get done what we have to for the trip” Fine so then my SIL calls back Friday night and told us that walter cancelled and was not coming over, so now we become second choice??? And get invited to come over??? NOT!!!!!!!!!! Then they have the gall to say that we are the only ones who haven’t seen their new house. DH told them that we made attempts more than once and it was always no good for them, he told them we wanted to come over on Saturday but walter was coming and now because he cancelled it’s ok for us to come??? No I don’t think so….we made other plans….Sorry…We are not available at your beck and call we don’t work that way. Now she is getting her oldest son to call our house and when his nephew was like “you are the only one who hasn’t seen our new house” DH told him “are you saying this or did mommy tell you to say it” and he was like “mommy told me to say it” LOL kids are always honest.

Now we get back from our trip. We called them to say hi and for a split second she asked how the trip was and then for the thousandth time asked when we are coming over because we are the only ones who haven’t seen the new house. DH was like “you have been in your new house for 3 weeks so don’t act like it’s been months ok, we have time”.

I told DH that I have no desire to see the house just because she’s been so annoying lately. I have no F*****G desire to see it…excuse my language. It’s not because I’m jealous…..DH and I have been married for a year and not once did they come and visit us. They last saw my apt. on the day of the rehearsal dinner when it was not fully furnished…! God help her if she gets me on the phone or says anything to me next week while we are at the family vacation at Pollace’s. If I hear “you guys are the only ones who haven’t seen our new house” just one more time, the first response will be “Rob and I have been married a year why haven’t you come to see our new apt”.

Am I over reacting??? I mean we go out and visit everybody. Why do we always have to be the ones who have to drive out to Commack or wherever??? Why can’t anyone ever drive out to queens to see us??? Why? Because we have no kids so it’s easier for us to pick up and go? That’s not fair to us either…I want to see how often they would come out if we had kids. The only ones from his family who has been to our house is his mom, his dad, his sister and her daughter and husband. It’s not like we don’t want to drive out to Commack it’s just that how about coming over to us some time??? We have told them so many times that they can come over anytime. Everybody is welcome to our place.

DH seems to think that they don’t see it necessary to make a trip out to queens to come see an apt. Which he says is stupid but unfortunately that’s the way they may be looking at it. So now we’re not worthy of company because we have a small apt. in queens. Look they can do me a favor and stay the f*** home on Christmas eve. I don’t want them coming over out of obligation because we are hosting Christmas eve this year, we don’t need or want pity…Thank you!

Another I hate is that they are always knocking and making fun of queens, meanwhile DH’s brother grew up in queens. So now I play their own game and crack jokes about LI. I don’t have anything agains LI so what gives them the right to knock queens?

Ack, what a mess. I don't think you're overreacting. It seems like visiting (whose turn it is to visit, why some people get more visits than others, who gets inconvenienced, et cetera) is often a big problem in families. You are absolutely not alone! People get so excited about their houses, too, so the problem becomes even more emotionally charged.

My advice is to be the bigger person and let these people have their way... but not all the time! In other words, see if you can arrange to split visits (like holidays) evenly. If this can be done in advance, even better.

And there's no reason to put up with them making fun of Queens -- keep doing what you're doing and give them some lighthearted L.I. jokes right back!

You are not overreacting... she needs to grow up.

As for the queens/long island deal... FH and I knock one another (in jest) all the time. He's from Staten Island, I'm from LI. We always joke about which one is the strong island and which one is the wrong island.

I understand it's all for fun but when it's constant it does start to get annoying.

Yes I agree, it also depends on the source.

I don't think you are overreacting at all....

Never mind your SIL or anyone else for that matter - except your husband -
work at your own pace and when you are both good and ready to see the house - and when they are ready to receive you - then you will go....

As for her mentioning constantly that 'you are the only ones to still see the house' - well - you can openly say the opportunity to see it has always been turned out and the timing hasn't been right - if she continues to get annoying - mention 'When was the last time you were at my house!' and tell her to take that!

I can certainly understand their excitement about the house - I know when we get one I am going to want everyone I know to come see it.

I don't think I would pester people but her enthusiasm seems to be crossing over into an overbearing attitude.

Since I would eventually have to go there for some occasion anyway, I would go and get it over with to stop the phone calls and comments.

The other issues with queens/long island, I presume have been on going so I am not sure how to stop that other then being direct or inviting them to you house and making the same annoying comments about how they never come to queens like they are doing to you now about the house.

The next time I hear her make any comment I will definitely say 'when was the last time you were at our place'

I mean don't get me wrong, if I bought a new house I would want everyone to see it too but I would not constantly harrass someone to come over. We always tells people they are welcomed to our home, I don't need to harrass anyone, it's rude. You know you are welcomed and that's it.
