Re: Inner envelope?

I know on a wedding invitation, you address the outside envelope and on the inner envelope you personalize it. For instance, on the outer envelope I wrote Mr. and Mrs. John Smith, then on the inner envelope I wrote John and Mary. I would assume you could do the same for an engagement party.

thank you for explaining that to me, but what is the piont of that?

Re: Inner envelope?

I think that it is to protect the invitation. Some envelopes are not thick enough to conceal the content, and some times when envelopes travel long (like overseas) they can get damage ... I know so because I write to some friends in other countries, and many time I get envelopes and postcards wrinkled or broken.

Re: Inner envelope?

so the outside envelope is for the formal names of people and the inside is their real names? does the inside envelope have their address as well?

Re: Inner envelope?

No - the inside envelope does not have the address too. Only the names.

Re: Inner envelope?

the custom comes from all the dirty hands touching the outer envelope...

when you received an invitation...your servant ( )... should take it out of the outer envelope and leave the inner envelope and contents for you to read (why you should put the person's name on it)

most people use the inner to be specific about who is being invited

I kept the inner envelop formal (ie Mr. and Mrs Jones)...but it is quite acceptable to put first names...and for an e-party I think you would want to be less formal

Do you HAVE to put names on the inner envelope, or can you just leave it blank? I don't remember ever receiving an invite with an inner envelope.

Re: Inner envelope?

I didn't address my inner envelopes at all.

It is quite acceptable these days to not use an inner envelope. Lined outer envelopes are of such quality now that you don't need anything else. We decided not to buy them & spend the extra money on Thank you's instead.

yabbo ... what a great explaination of the history! It's like the tissue issue ... these are long ago customs that have lost their meaning and we're still using them b/c we're 'supposed to'.

Thanks Jenn. I'm having a friend print my envelopes and would feel bad asking her to also do the inner envelopes. Maybe I will ask her opinion.
