For those of you who are married and either went on your DH's medical insurance or vice versa, can you please tell me what is involved? I'm going to be dropping my insurance and going on FH's after we are married in November. Do I have to wait for our Marriage License?
Thanks!

Re: Insurance Question?
I was told all I need to do is notify them within 30 days that I am married and need to add my husband to my policy. Have him check with HR....some companies make you wait for the renewal period and some don't.

Re: Insurance Question?
I needed the marriage license. It needs to be done within a certain amount of time - it doesn't have to be done during open enrollment because it is a life-changing event.

Re: Insurance Question?
ALSO make sure that you get added to HIS FIRST BEFORE you drop yours because then if you happen to have ANY condition pop up, the lapse of coverage, even for a day, will count as a pre-exisiting condition and you'll be ineligible for coverage on his insurance. Our HR guy explained this yesterday to the lady I replaced because she is going on Cobra for now and hten looking for work again after she moves and settles...so they advised her to keep the Cobra until AFTER she's covered elsewhere to avoid the lapse.

Re: Insurance Question?
I agree with all the above. I needed my marriage license and it had to be done within 30 days of event date!

Re: Insurance Question?
I was added to DH's insurance. He just went down to his HR Dept for a form that I had to fill out. It was pretty simple. No marriage license was needed. But, I didn't drop my Ins until I got my new Ins card in the mail.
