Insurance Question

For those who recently got married, what exactly did you have to do to get your spouse added to your insurance?

Was it just a couple of forms to fill out?
How long did it take to 'go through' the system/ get your cards?
Did you have to wait for an open enrollment or was it considered immediate- a 'life event'?

Thanks!

Re: Insurance Question

My husband brought our marriage certificate and my social security card to his union hall. They processed all the paperwork while he was there.

Cards came about 2 weeks later but I was told I could use my husbands cards if necessary. Even when I got the new cards they don't have my information, only his.

I had no waiting period.

Insurance Question - Long Island Weddings

I'm already on my FH's insurance. His company is based out of CA and all we did was ask if I could be on it. He called his HR and originally she said I had to wait until open enrollment but then when he mentioned that we had gotten engaged and moved in during that time, she just added me on.

All he had to do was give her my SSN.

I would just check with your HR department to see what you would need :)

Insurance Question - Long Island Weddings

I'm just having a tough time getting ours set up because it didn't get OK'd to have same sex spouses until 1/1/14 per the insurance's most updated amendments.
However, I am still in limbo and have been for at least a month (that's how long my paperwork has been filled out) or 2 1/2 months (that's how long it's been OK per insurance co.) or 6 months (since we've been married).

It could be a 30, etc day max on life event changes but it wasn't POSSIBLE for us until 100 or so days after marriage...

Why should it be different or be so hard!!! UGH! vent over (for now)
