Integrated OBGYN group

Integrated OBGYN group

I've been going to my gyn for years now and have always seen a nurse practitioner (midwife). I really liked her so I never cared that I was not seeing an actual doctor.

Well, when I went for my first apt recently I found out that's how they handle OBGYN also. They work as an integrated office, meaning you see 5 different people throughout your pregnancy (2 doctors, 2 midwives and a physician asst- all women). When you give birth, you will have any one of these women with you, depending who is on call.

I already know one of them b/c that's who I've been seeing for years and I just met another one recently...who was also nice. The office is very helpful and friendly and everyone is so nice.

Has anyone had this and how was your experience?

TIA

Re: Integrated OBGYN group

First off, where on EARTH did you find an ALL female group like this? I searched and searched and found nothing! This is AMAZING.

My ONLY concern is that I find it hard to believe that you do not decide if you want midwife or OB care- there are VERY different ideas of birth between these two care givers. An OB has a much more medical approach to birth whereas a midwife will help you typically avoid medications. They use different techniques to help a women labor. And there are many women who do not feel confident in a midwifes care (I believe very strongly in them though) And if you are a midwife type patient and an OB shows up I would think that would NOT give you the experience you were looking for. SO I would really sit down and speak to the manager and figure out how this works exactly...and then decide if you are more towards OBs or midwives.

Please let us know how this works out for you. As a firm believer in midwifery this sounds great to me.

I have the same thing- My doc is female so far Ive seen her 3x. I ve seen the nurse practioner 1 and the midwife 2x- all female. There is also a male dr that works in the practie that I havent seen yet. Out of all the poeple Ive seen I would prefer to give birth with the midwife. She seems more understanding of my needs and the Dr seems a little cold. Im not quite sure if I should ask them to swtich or what since everytime I go I see someone else depending on what day of the week.

Re: Integrated OBGYN group

Thanks

I go to Obstetrical & Gynecological Services of Rockville Centre.

I'm reading the packet they gave me and it says:
We practice as an integrated physician/midwife/physician's assistant group. We encourage you to meet each of us over the course of your pregnancy. It is important that we get to know you. Our group will be able to offer you more knowledge and experience than any one individual. The midwife or physician's assistant on call will care for you during your labor and delivery with the close consultation and assistance of the physician on call. She is also available should an emergency arise after office hours.

I'll have to talk to them further about it.

Re: Integrated OBGYN group

Here is one question I would ask:
If I need an emergency c/s will MY DOCTOR be the one doing it? (because if the dr is in consult, and NOT onsite, how does that work). I would be very nervous if they said an on-call, in hospital doctor does it.. That means you have NEVER met this doctor and take it from me, that can really be a very difficult situation and make a scary event even worse.

If during my l&d there are problems who cares for me? Again, you would need an OB for that.

How does the midwife feel about pain medications? Some are very 'anti' pain meds (which I am too) but you need to be comfortable with the situation and beliefs of the midwife that you are using.
