People in One State Marry the Earliest
When wedding bells ring in Utah, chances are the bride and groom are very young. A new Census Bureau study released late last week shows that no one gets married younger than couples in Utah, where the median age is 21.9 for women and 23.9 for men, reports The Associated Press. The median age across the United States for a first marriage is 25.1 years for women and 26.7 years for men, about a year older for both than it was just 10 years ago.
Who gets married the latest? That prize goes to residents of Washington, D.C., where the median marriage age for both men and women is about 30. Generally speaking, couples near the East and West coasts marry at an older age than those in Middle America, while Southerners are the least likely to live together without getting married. And men wait longer than women in every state. 'Later marriage is very strongly associated with higher levels of education,' David Popenoe, co-director of the National Marriage Project at Rutgers University, told AP. 'That's why people in the Northeast have such a late age of marriage.'
Other factors influencing marital age are religion and whether the couple are willing to live together without marriage. If they cohabitate, then marriage tends to be delayed. 'Men marry too late from the point of view of women, especially educated men,' Popenoe told AP. It leaves more women single, or marrying beyond the age of childbirth.'
This is the first time the Census Bureau computed state-by-state averages on marriage age. Other interesting findings:
--29 percent of all new mothers are unmarried.
--Among unmarried mothers, 50 percent live in poverty, compared with 12 percent of married mothers.
--At 53.4 percent, Washington, D.C. has the highest percentage of new moms who are unmarried. The city also has the highest percentage of new mothers who live in poverty, at 36.3 percent.
--Maine has the highest percentage of households with unmarried couples, at 7.3 percent, while Alabama had the lowest, at 3 percent.
