Interfaith Ceremony Rabbi/Priest

Hello Everyone,

I am very confused about the interfaith ceremony (Priest and Rabbi) and could use some direction...

My Fiancee is Catholic and I was raised in an Interfaith household. He is convinced that a Priest will refuse to marry us outside of the church... My understanding is they will as long as they receive permission from the Bishop. Can someone please explain to me how it would work to have a ceremony performed by a Priest and a Rabbi??

Thank you!!

Interfaith Ceremony Rabbi/Priest - Long Island Weddings

I am Catholic and my husband is Jewish. We ended up having a judge, but I spoke to a priest and he said that because it was an interfaith marriage he would be able to perform the ceremony at the venue, with the exception that it HAD to be indoors. He also told me he would have no problem performing with a rabbi and that we would likely have a harder time finding an agreeable rabbi than an agreeable priest.
Now, if we were both Catholic, we would have only been able to be married in church. The venue dispensation is permitted only when one spouse is not Catholic and the marriage, while valid and recognized by the church, is not a sacrament. You need two baptized Christians for it to be a sacrament.

Good luck!

Re: Interfaith Ceremony Rabbi/Priest

One if my good friends got married a year and a half ago and they were an interfaith couple. They were told all the same stuff you were and no one said what they wanted (Priest and Rabbi) could happen. They did have a real Priest and Real Rabbi perform a full interfaith ceremony at their reception hall. The Priest applied for dispensation (I think that is what it is called) and said interfaith is so common now they generally approve them. In her house she has both her Katooba and certificate from the diocese of Rockville center. It can happen and don't let anyone tell you differently.
