Interviewing and Being Engaged

Interviewing and Being Engaged

Anyone interviewing for teaching jobs? I am looking for a guidance counselor job and I heard a horror story about someone going on an interview and all they did was stare at her ring and ask her if the wedding/marriage was going to conflict with the job! I figured that if I was asked - I would just tell people that since I am getting married this summer - that I won't be affected next fall - I am hearing now that the school district will assume that I will want to have kids right away and leave! I've been told NOT to wear my ring on interviews! ANyone deal with this at all - any opinions or feedback?
Thanks!!

Wow..
I don't have an answer.. but that's tough..Sorry you're going through this.

You could always not wear it and later say you were having it cleaned if you're that concerned.

I just went on one and DIDN'T wear my ring....that was my fear. It wasn't for a teaching job, but I felt like they may think I will want to ask for all this time off, etc.

I just found out that I got it!!!

To be honest I have heard the same thing a couple of times, but my district recently hired 2 teachers that we already booked to get married during the school year and they hired them and gave them time for their honeymoon. I think it depends on the district and how marketable (if that is a word) you are.

Good luck!!!!

Wow that is all very crazy. I understand what you mean. I work as a school social worker and I know that it can be competitive in schools. It is a tough decision. You should just think it through. If you are good and they like you it doesnt matter. Good Luck.

Don't wear the ring to avoid questions...

In my line of work it is illegal to ask about marriage and family during an interview. But if you are wearing the ring I think people somehow assume you are putting the topic out there.

Re: Interviewing and Being Engaged

I was very self conscious about my ring on an interview 2 months ago. I made it all the way to the superintendent, and the position(social work) went to the 'other candidate' I dont think it was b.c of my ring, but I would reconsider wearing it next time. Im soo jealous of the school social worker that posted before me

Even though it is illegal to not hire someone b.c they are engaged places to it all the time. I wouldnt wear it because they do tend to stare at it, and the first thing they think of is that since ur a woman your gonna have kids right away and they are going to loose you. Good Luck with everything tho!!

Re: Interviewing and Being Engaged

I work in HR and it is illegal to ask about marriage and family during an interview. That being said, I wore my ring and told them up front in my interview. I had to since I was interviewing for a position due to relocation b/c I was getting married. I couldn't hide that. It didn't affect anything. My new boss told me since I would be here for 9 months, she would have no problem giving me the time off for my wedding. I guess i got lucky.

Re: Interviewing and Being Engaged

I just read about something like this on MSN.com
It was last week but you can probably look it up.
They had delicate ways of getting around that question- which are by the way illegal
IF they do ask that question, I believe the way that msn suggested to phrase your answer was like this 'My career is very important to me and I would not allow my personal life to interfere with my career and professional life.' If they continue on that track, you could kindly also state that you do not let your personal life interfere with your career and that is the reason you are getting married in August!
