how do you indicate to someone that you are inviting them with a guest?

On the invitation just write 'their name' and guest.
i.e. Mary Smith and Guest

then what is the point of having an outer and an inner invitation- should the & guest go on the outside of the envelope? or in the inner one? do i even need an inner envelope?

usually outside envelope is for the actual mailing address and on the inner envelope you write 'Mary & Guest'
