I have been searching in vain for simple invites on heavy card stock that have a small lighthouse on the top. I have found many with shells but no lighthouses. I am a non-fussy person so I hate the lighthouse invites I have found- too much. My latest idea is to buy an embosser to put the lighthouse on top of an exsiting invite. I can design the lighthouse and have it custom made for $70. What do you guys think???

that's sounds wonderful! i have seen some beautiful letterpress with an old ship, but none with a lighthouse, but they were also very expensive.
speaking of nautical themes, have you seen the flag cake in modern bride at ashley banfield's (CNN reporter) wedding? so cute!

christine - given your DIY abilities, I think this is a great idea! You can probably buy simple card stck invites for cheap, and give it your own personal touch! I would just try it out first with a piece of card stock and any old embossing tool before making the decision to have one custom made.
i am having the same problem - anything with a 'vineyard' theme is too busy and corny. I need simple and elegant but different - what is the company you are using for the embossing?

I think it's worth the investment. I've only seen one or two invites with lighthouses, but they seem a bit busy, designing your own gives you complete creative control

Why not do an emboss of a bunch of grapes. Easy so the geometry of the embossing should look alright, don't you think?

Christine: We embossed our holiday cards and I am your opposite when it comes to articstic talent (I am awful) but it looked really good. I went to paper source and they had great paper stock and embossers and the lady showed me how. Worth a try I think, at a minimum.
I'm actually getting married at a lighthouse (Fire Island). I'm also making my own invitations (because I really didn't like any of the invitations available that had lighthouses on them).
My first idea for invitations was to use one of my photos of the lighthouse as background of the invite, but I don't like how it looked.
Now, I'm doing pocketfold invitations, but it needs a little something extra (I tried making a stencil from one of my photos and using it to put a design on the invitation, but didn't like how that looked either).
I never thought of an embosser! Can I ask where you are getting one?

Re: Invitation idea- need input
I found one that you can create your own artwork and they will create it- $45 for custom work and then 39 for the embosser- I think that is a little high so I am going to keep looking. But to get ideas- www.customembossers.com

I LOVED that spread on Ashley Banfield's wedding! Did you also see the cute nautical OOT bags she used? I would love to find them.

Do you plan to have someone design the lighthouse graphic for you? Or find an image off of the Internet? We need to find a graphic artist to design a compass rose for our invites. I don't really know where to start. We've had trouble finding a graphic on the Internet that is of a good quality (resolution and camera-ready) and traditional looking. The compass I use in my avatar is no good.

I loved the spread, but don't remember the bags...I'll have to look again.
Christine, saw these invites too, and thught they were cute. I think they can paint any lighthouse you like...or perhaps they help inspire another DIY project. My Personal Artist

Re: Invitation idea- need input
I am having the same issue with sailboat invites. I think I might try to do it myself too, I am looking for the same thing. Something very simple. I thought about doing a lighthouse too...or beach chairs.

I designed it myself today. Lighthouses are pretty simple and I saw a stained glass one that was perfect to copy. It just needs to be all black and white with no small details. I am going to call one of the sites that makes custom embossers and see if that would be ok. They will help you by designing it too if you need it. See the earlier link about the embosser custom for 60.
