invitation madness -- long but advice please -- last invite question, I promise!

OK, I was up really late last night finishing them. FH is away on his first business trip ever, so I had to do them myself. They are all stuffed and stamped. There are a few that my friend made mistakes on when she printed the addresses on the envelopes, so I'm waiting for her to correct them and get those to me tomorrow. I didn't want to mail any of them out until I got those, because I didn't want some people to get invites before others. But then I couldn't help myself this morning, and sent some out to close family (like my mom) and very close friends. I just dropped them in the mailbox. Is that OK? I have the rest all ready to go out, and I know all you ladies talk about hand cancelling and stuff -- is it really bad to go for a walk and just put them in the mailbox rather than going to the post office? I am sooooo very tempted to just go out and drop them in the mailbox right now. Thoughts? Opinions?

Invites are typically hand cancelled but it's really a matter of personal preference. I can completely understand your excitement!

HOw long before the rest of them are ready? If its just a day or two then its probably fine to mail them out....people dont always get them on the same day. I actually had people in Westchester get them a full week after everyone else did.

yes, before he left, FH took a stuffed envelope to the post office and had it weighed, they are 58cent stamps. Pretty standard looking envelopes. I hope the ones I sent out won't be ruined by not being hand-cancelled -- but I honestly don't even know what that means!!!

they'll be ready tomorrow. But is it OK to just put them in the mailbox, or do I have to bring them to the post office?

I'm not too sure what the term hand-cancelled means either so I tried looking it up and didn't get anything...anyone know the answer?

I would definitely NOT suggest putting them in the mail box!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Take the extra few minutes to bring them into the post office. Its worth it for the peace of mind to hand them to a person inside the building, even if you don't get them hand canceled.

True Story: my uncle had mailed some of my cousins invitations in the mailbox, and sent someone to mail more invitations at the same mail box the next day ... the mail box had been STOLEN over night!!!!!!!

I would REALLY recommend getting them hand canceled though. It doesn't cost any extra, and will help protect your invitations.

Wow, that is crazy about the mailbox getting stolen! I guess if my mom's invite gets stolen it will be OK! I think I will bring them to the post office tomorrow at lunch. What exactly is hand cancelled?

Hand canceling (aka Hand Stamping) is where they use a rubber stamp to 'cancel' the postage stamps you put on the envelope so they can't be used again. Using the rubber stamp and doing it by hand saves it from going through one of the machines that is known to cause the most damage to envelopes.
