Invitation preservation-getting ahead of myself

My parents have their invitation preserved, not framed. The edges are burnt & its sort of decoupaged/shelcaked to a an ornated wood placque.
Do people still do that?
If not do you think we coudl do it ourselves?

Not sure how to make the block of wood decorative. I'm not a wood carver.
Maybe just route the edges? (Actaully, have Dad do that part?)

I wouldn't want it quite as eleaborate as theirs.
