If you are inviting some one with a guest, does it go on the outside envelope? or just the inner?

from what i've heard, its not polite to put 'and guest' on the outer envelope. not sure why though.

We did it on the outer, only because we had so many invites going out and it was so much work just to get the outer envelopes completed. Nobody seemed to mind.
