Invitation question

On the outside envelope do you spell out the state?

No, you do not have to...

It's up to you really. My calligrapher did, I also wanted the zip code on its own seperate line underneath, but that's because I like the way that looks. I think it's the more formal way of doing it, but obviously it's a personal decision.

Hmm. I always thought you should if you wanted it to be more formal.

My mom who will be writing the addresses of guests prob wont be, but we got all the return addy's done and they didnt spell out new york either

new york was spellout on the actual invite itself, along with the reception card

Thank you! I guess the consensus is it's a personal decision?

Re: Invitation question

I say if it's cheaper to do just 'NY' instead of New York written out - who cares - The envelope gets thrown away anyway!!! I know that I wouldn't even look!!

Re: Invitation question

the problem is it's a self fold envelope where it won't get thrown away. The card is also the envelope. that's what makes me nervous about doing something wrong.

Re: Invitation question

Etiquette (if you care )states that nothing should be abbreviated. Supposedly you're even supposed to write 'apartment' out, but who has room on their envelope for that . I would definitely write out the stat though. HTHs!!!

Personally, I am having everything written out except numbers. Even NYC streets such as 'east twenty-seventh street'. I just like the formality of it.
