Re: invitation timeline
I emailed the same question last week to a place I am thinking of getting my invitations from. My wedding is August 11th. This was their response:
It is never to early to order, and I personally rather cross something off my to do list - especially since the list seems endless while planning a wedding.
The general turnaround time for the invitation you like is 1 week for a digital proof, 2 weeks for an actual sample and 4-5 weeks production - so basically around 2 months pending approval on both proofs. We usually suggest to our brides mailing out in the 8 week range. If you did not send save the dates or have a lot of out of towners you can mail out a week or 2 earlier.
You do have a little time to place your order but as we approach wedding season everything does take a little longer.

Re: invitation timeline
I am getting married on 7/7 and have not chosen invitations yet either. I want to DIY but can't find a template to print a design on plain cardstock. I also haven't looked at dresses yet, flowers, hotel, wedding bands or limo. Coming on this site makes me feel like I'm very behind but it will all get done!

Re: invitation timeline
you havent looked @ wedding dresses???? or bridesmaids? I'd get on that asap, the turn around is @ least 4 mos depending on designer etc, also we are getting married in high season... Everyone gets super busy.. As for DIY, i am so not the type :( though i did print my own invites for my e-party...

Get your dress done, unless you plan to go to David's Bridal or get a sample dress. But I'd get on that if you don't want either of those options. Well even with David's come to think of it, get your dress now. It's only 4 months away.
Flowers/hotel/band/limo can wait if you're not very picky with any of them.
I've still got tonnes to do but that's because FI is abroad and I need him here with me to do them.

I am getting married 4 days before you. I think you need to get on the dresses ASAP. I ordered mine in November, it came in fast but that rarely happens (Alfred Angelo)... My girls are all getting measured by tonight to order the dresses. Remember they have to order together for dye reasons so you may have a lag in getting them measured by a certain date.
As for invites, I just ordered and received my invitations (again super fast) but I was happy to get them done. It depends on how fancy you want them and to whom you want to make them. HTH

Update: I got my dress!! And I didn't have to go with Davids Bridal or a sample. The store had just gotten a new enzoani dress that was just my size and the perfect style for my wedding. On to the next check...

Re: invitation timeline
Ours are taking 6 business days for digital proofs/design then I think 10 days, something like that for them to print. Hopefully by the end of the month we'll have them and they'll be sent out. The FI and I moved slow. We knew ages ago what invites we wanted but just ordered them recently.
It should all work out except for scheduling with a calligrapher. That is turning out to be trickier than we thought
Have you ordered your invites yet?

Re: invitation timeline
I mailed out my invites early Jan. giving our guests about 6 weeks response time. We wanted to have the final numbers back at least 4 weeks in advance.
