We found a set of those do-it-yourself invitation kits at Michael's that we really like and that complement our theme. We even have coupons to make it super-affordable.
Two questions: 1. If anyone has used them/seen them--does the finished product look professional? I want to use the money in our budget for other things that are more important to us, but I don't want the first impression anybody has of our wedding to be sloppy or tacky.
2. They're square. Does anybody know how much extra postage is required?
TIA

I've seen the DIY invites and think they look fine, honestly most ppl throw these invites out anyway so I think its a great place to cut costs. The only thing with the DIY invites is that the ink is flat but thats not a huge deal, I petsonally just prefer the raised ink on invites. I would buy them and try it out and if you hate it you can probably return them. ( Square invites have a 20 cent surcharge)

Thank you! I prefer the raised ink, too. Unfortunately, I have to make compromises somewhere to stay within the budget and in the grand scheme of things, I feel like that's a pretty small one...

Try davids bridal. I got 150 invites from them with addressing for $503. Their invites have raised ink. I also splurged on bows, so figure ifI didn't do bows or addresses it would have been $300. I feel same as you, no one looks at the invite for longer than 20 second so this was an area to save money in. They have 20% sales all the time.
Invites include all normal stuff... invite, inner and outer envelope, response card and envelope, reception card...

I din't see any designs at David's that complemented our theme, but it was a while ago. Maybe I'll check them out again. Thank you!

My FBIL used the Michael's invitations and they were very nice. I just thought the paper was a little flimsy. Maybe cut some colored cardstock to give the invites a border and a little more support and texture? My invitation budget was also fairly small for all the guests I had. DIYing helped me achieve the look I wanted without going over.
