Invite Addressing Question (Mr. & Mrs. ...)

Invite Addressing Question (Mr. & Mrs. ...)

Trying to get the list together for the calligrapher and I'm having a hard time. Is there no way to address a formal invitation to a married couple without reverting back to the 1950s (i.e. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Schmo, like the woman doesn't have her own identity)?

Is there a very simple option that I'm overlooking or do I really have to send them out this way??

I just did this and while I agree- it is so completely misogynistic, it is the formal way to adress an invite. I bet that your calligrapher will be able to tell you some alternative ideas.

I refused to address envelopes as Mr. and Mrs. Joe Schmo, etiquette or not. I wrote Mr. and Mrs. Joe and Jane Schmo instead.

Ok, another question regarding this. What if the wife is a lawyer? Where does the Esq. go?

The invitation websites seem to say that Esq. is not used on an invitation or social circumstamces, it is used when sending correspondence to business office. So, it would also be written as Mr. and Mrs. Joe Schmo
