Invite Addressing Questions

Invite Addressing Questions

OK, so I am getting all confused with the proper addressing of the invitations. I have read all the past posts and everything, but still have some questions, maybe you wonderful ladies can help me out:

OK, did you guys really spell out all the state names? such as New York, instead of NY??
All the things I've read say to spell it out--just seems annoying for the post office and for me! LOL

and also, for a married couple--does the woman's first name appear anywhere on the invite??? it's saying that it should be Mr. and Mrs John Smith on the outer and then again on the inner. seems weird to me.

THANKS!

Re: Invite

i spelled out the whole state on the envelope...
as well as some of the numbers....say if the address was 11 pine st...i wrote:
eleven pine street, blah blah, new york 12345

and as for the married couples, i harted to do it, but i wrote Mr. and Mrs. John Smith, without the woman's name...it's tradition to do it that way....and i was in no mood to fight tradition at that point!

Re: Invite Addressing Questions

You should spell the state name out according to proper invite etiquette.

We used the wife's name on the outer envelope:
Mr. John and Mrs. Mary Smith

Well, etiquette be damned! I refuse to address anyone by 'Mrs. John Doe' because I just think it's outrageously sexist. I'm using both first names of each couple, and Emily Post can yell at me later.

I agree that writing out the state name seems annoying for the post office, but I think they mostly go by the zip code, anyway.

Re: Invite Addressing Questions

Thank you ladies!!

OK, so I will write out the state name, but is it ok if I just put Mr and Mrs (man's name) (last name) on the inner and outer? is that rude? I wouldn't be insulted and I doubt my guests would even notice all this stuff i'm obsessing about.

Re: Invite Addressing Questions

on the inner, if i knew the people, i just used first names...to make it more personal.

however, for my parent's friends, unless i call them by their first names, i wrote mr. and mrs. so and so

i think we put more thought into this than the people who get the invitations...unless th're recently engaged or married

oh wait---what if you do a couple who is seriously dating (about to get engaged) or an engaged couple where the girl still has her last name? thank you!

Re: Invite Addressing Questions

good question!!!

i addressed it to the person we knew in the relationship - say it was a friend of mine, i would address it to that person, but then on the inner, i would write her and her fiance/boyfriend's name

if they lived together (my sister) but were not married, i put both full names on the outer envelope (ms. lady mcname and mr. bob mcothername)

I was only going to put NY...not spell out the entire state...

thanks palebride!! I really appreciate it!!

Janine, I guess it doesn't really matter. Either way it'll get there!

Re: Invite Addressing Questions

I was going to write NY, but i was living with my mother at the time, and she notices things like that....she is the one who comments on how elegant it looks when the state is written out...so i pretty much did it for her

i figured since she wasn't getting the church wedding of her dreams, i could at least make the invitation envelopes look elegant!

Re: Invite Addressing Questions

I just received my list back from the calligrapher and this is what she did:

Mr. and Mrs. John Smith
Fourteen Oak Lane (Numbers 1 - 20 30, 40, 50, etc. are spelled out as are Drive, Street, lane, Boulevard, etc)
Johnstown, New York 12345
(All states are spelled out)

(inside says Mr. and Mrs. Smith)
Also, anyone with a 'non-named' guest says Ms. Smith and Guest on the inside envelope only (outer says Ms. Jane Smith) but if they are serious and we know the name of the person invited, their name goes on the outside envelope. I'm not sure of that is correct or not but we like it better that way
