My sister just got married last year. Am I supposed to invite my new brother-in-law's family to the wedding? I am o.k. with this - I actually felt bad that i didn't think of them originally (there are only 5 people) but my FH thought this was kinda weird. Just curious what everyone thought....... ?

Re: Invite etiquette?
I think it would be a nice gesture. How well do you know them?

You don't have to but by all means if you want them there, why not?

Re: Invite etiquette?
I would say his parents should be invited (as a nice gesture, though not necessary). I think inviting the rest of the family depends on their relationship with you.
At our wedding, we invited the parents of both of DH's BILs, but not their siblings.

my brother got married last year and there is no way i am inviting his in-laws. i don't know them at all and our guest list is already too big!

Re: Invite etiquette?
I am inviting two of my cousins inlaws....I have a small family so I see them quite often. I would if you have any sort of relationship with them.

I invited my brother & sister's inlaws & family. It is a nice gesture.

Re: Invite etiquette?
I think it depends on how well you know them. I am inviting my brother's wife's whole family, but only because I see them on a regular basis (at least monthly!) and both FI and I are very friendly with them. IF we were not close though, I would not invite them.

Re: Invite etiquette?
I have a question to add on top of that...both of my brothers have long-term girlfriends that will probably end up being their wives one day (both are younger than me in their early 20's)...do i invite their girlfriend's parents? my mom seems to think we are supposed to...i would never have guessed

Oooh, Annieb, that's a tough one - what is YOUR relationship with the girlfriend's parents? I would have never thought that either, unless you are close with them. I mean, they aren't family yet?

Re: Invite etiquette?
I wouldn't - a girlfriend isn't a 'permanent fixture' in your lives yet. But if the families are close then you might want to consider it

Re: Invite etiquette?
if its in your budget, ask your sister who she thinks should be invited from his family that you know.

Re: Invite etiquette?
My FMIL included her son in laws parents, as well as my FSILs parents. I was kind of annoyed, as I have never even met these people, and FH has not seen them in years, and now they will be at our wedding. But whatever, it was not worth the drama to me so I let it go- as long as I get my important people on the guest list, that is what matters

Re: Invite etiquette?
When my brother's wife sister was geting married our family was not invited. Not even my parents. When I get married I plan on inviting just my sil's parents but that's it. It depends how close you are with them.

Re: Invite etiquette?
I spoke with FH about this again last night and he is really opposed to it. He thinks its a stupid idea and if i go down that road than he should invite his brother-in-law's family etc. etc. He has a point. But now how do I tell my sis?

Re: Invite etiquette?
If my sister got married, I wouldnt expect her to invite Len's family. Maybe his Mom, since they know each other, but that's it. It really depends on your relatinship w/them.

Re: Invite etiquette?
Tell her you can only invite X amount of people and if you invite her inlaws and your FH's siblings inlaws you are over that number. I think she would understand that.

Re: Invite etiquette?
So I wouldn't be offending her husband (or his family) if I didn't invite them?

Re: Invite etiquette?
I dont think so...you have to draw the line somewhere...if you had an unlimited budget then maybe you would invite them.
