hello. since my wedding is being held at the aquarium, i was thining we should have something on the invite to indicate that it is a formal event (i don't want people showign up in khakis and shirts bc they don't know any better). would this be appropriate on the invite 'Formal reception following ceremony'? is there a better way to express that we don't want people to dress down bc of its location? i just don't want people to get confused, what do you think? ~lacey

Re: invite question
You could do black tie optional. That way people know it's formal, but don't feel obligated to wear a tux.

Re: invite question
ok, so formal implies tux? thats not what we want...hmm. black tie optional is good, but we can't have any more lines on our invite...so is it wierd to put 'Black tie optional reception following ceremony' ? or should i just leave it off and spread the word that just bc its at an aquarium its not any less formal than any other typical LI wedding? ~lacey

Re: invite question
I think writing formal reception would be fine. I don't think formal necessarily equals tux. I think most weddings are formal affairs, right?

Oh, I don't know if formal implies a tux. I just think formal may be vague, and with black tie optional everyone knows what that means. But I understand if you have a constraint with lines on your invite. Then I'm sure putting Formal Reception to Follow should be fine.

Re: invite question
I recently attended a destination wedding in Cancun. The B&G wanted everyone to know that eventhough the wedding would take place at a beachfront hotel, it was still a formal event. They included the words 'formal attire' on their invitation and everyone got the message.
I could be wrong, but I would think that when people read 'formal attire' they will know that a suit is required, but necessarily a tux. There is no way that anyone can think that khakis or shorts are formal attire.

Re: invite question
I agree that writing formal reception to follow is a good way to let guests know what you want. Also ask some family and friends to spread the word.

Re: invite question
Is your actual ceremony is at the aquarium? If NOT, I would leave the invite alone and just go with whatever church/temple, etc. you might be getting married at. THEN, on the smaller card indicating the reception details, I would write:
Formal reception to follow at: Aquarium, etc. etc. etc.
Black tie implies tux....and a ball gown/floor length dress for the ladies. When people see formal that infer at least a suit for the men....and usually anything dressy for the ladies... we figure it out!!!
If you are actually getting married at the aquarium, it might be weird to write 'formal attire requested' JMO... i've only seen on invites 'Black tie requested or black tie optional. If you put black tie optional, people will know that it is a fancy event, but they are not necessarily bound to wearing a tux...

Re: invite question
i wrote 'black tie invited' on the bottom right corner of my reception card
i know alot of people that own tuxes and want to wear them so this lets them do that. it also lets them know that black tie is not mandatory

Re: invite question
thanks for the input girls! whatever i use, has to go on the same line as 'reception follwing ceremony' as i do not have any more lines left on my square invite. we aren't using reception card bc we the ceremony and reception are both at atlantis, otherwise the attire info could go go there. ~lacey
