Unfortunately, FH's dad passed away 3 years ago. We're getting ready to order invites and I thought we'd do something like 'Son of Mrs John Doe and the late John Doe,' because I really wanted his family to be included on the invite. His mom said yesterday that etiquette says her husband's name shouldn't be on the invite, and she doesn't want her name on the invite by itself...so she doesn't want her family mentioned at all. FH's family is from the South...very traditional. I told FH that I was a little disappointed that they wouldn't be on the invite, and he said that's what his mom wants... Would you push the issue?? I never got to meet my FFIL, he passed just before we started dating...and I really wanted to include him on our invitations and in our day as much as possible, because I can see how much FH misses him during this time of his life. Also, he won't really give me an answer about what he wants when it comes to this...he keeps saying it's up to his mom... Sorry this is so long! Thanks for the advice ladies!

Re: Invite question
No, I wouldn't push the issue. I think this is something very personal to his family, particularly his mom. If this is how she wants it, I would respect that.
If FH *really* wanted it or something, it would be between your FH and his mom... but it sounds like FH is okay with it and his mom doesn't want it. To be honest, it was her husband - let her be the one to decide. It would be wrong to push the issue IMHO.
ETA - If one of my parents had passed, I, too, would leave something like this up to the surviving parent. It really is their decision. Just b/c we would have wanted it one way does not mean that's how everyone would want it. I personally would respect her wishes without question.

i agree...
it was nice of you to think of them and all-- but it's her decision- don't feel bad about leaving them off... it's what she wants.
