Invite the Priest to the Reception

Original post by leeserd

FH says that it is traditional to invite the priest who is marrying us to our reception. This is the first that I have heard of this. This is not our parish and we do not know this priest well. FH says this is a must...I say if everyone else does it then we will but if not, the priest is out. Please let me know if this is tradtional and therefore a must.

I absolutely agree with FH! it is a must. the priest is part of the most IMPORTANT part of the day, therefore he shoudl be asked to the reception.

however, just to let you know, most priests decline just aobut every invite they get...otherwise they would be at several weddings every weekend. they just can't go to them all. i say be polite and invite, but realistically he may not attend and if he does it may only be to the cocktail hour.

our priest attended, but only because he is a good friend of DH's.

Agree. Our priest is a friend of our family and has been our parish's pastor for close to 20 years, so we of course invited him and he came.

But it is proper etiquette and frankly, just good manners. I think it would be rude not to invite him. jmo.

It is customary to invite the priest to the reception. It is in good manners/taste to do so and they normally sit at the one of the parents tables at the reception.

You should also invite them to the rehearsal dinner as well.

I agree and we did the same. He declined to both but we offered.

Ditto...we asked, he said a glass of seltzer at the cocktail hour and then he'll be on his way lol

When I called the church (not even my own church, FH's church), to inquire if the 3 days we were looking at were available and allowed, the priest informed us that all of the days were allowed (Greek Orthodox Church has certain 'black out periods', and we were cutting it dangerously close to advent), but said if we chose the Friday, it's a fast day so may inconvenience those who cannot eat meat or fish, on the Sunday we'd have to make sure it doesn't interfere with mass, and the Saturday was fine as long as we cleared out before St. Nicholas vespers at 7:00, but then that he wouldn't be able to come to reception! It was kind of funny, he sounded bummed lol. I also thought it was a little funny that he assumed he would be invited, but I know that he's friendly with the family, and that he was on the guest list.

Now, we picked the Saturday, so I know for a fact it's going to be a wasted invitation, but we'll most likely send it anyways, just because it would be considered a major faux-pas not to.

we invited him out of courtesy, plus I have known our priest for many years, but he declined. I don't think he usually accepts any invitations, but I think it's still the right thing to do to invite them.
