invites with guests

i know their are tons of posts out there with this topic, but instead of searching i wanted to get an up to date 2011 opinion. If your not sure if a guest over 18 probably, like 20 years old is dating anyone do you have to invit with a guest. this was our debate tonight with another couple getting married. they say no and i was nder the impression is was proper to invite older guest (18plus) with guests. ??? confusedddd

Re: invites with guests

Here's my thought process...

Originally I thought, no, no guest.

But,

I value my guests, right? For the small subset group of people this applies to, I can make the sacrifice, **** it up, and give them the courtesy of inviting them with a guest.

If they're dating someone, great, I think they should come. If they're not, then chances are they won't bring some random person to my wedding, but if they feel they'll have a better time by doing so, then I want them to be happy.

We are paying for the majority of the wedding ourselves. Parents are helping some, but not the bulk of it.

I just think it's the right thing to do, to give them the option.

I have a lot of single friends and cousins that I won't be inviting with a date. They will be around a lot of family and friends so I am fine with this. If someone would be totally solo at the wedding I would invite them with a date but not if there are a lot of other singles they know at the wedding.

I totally agree that family has family however I am inviting single friends with a date.

I work in a school and am inviting a few single people without dates because that is sort of our group dynamic...we all mingle with eachother this way all the time.

I'm inviting all guests over 18 with a guest. I want everyone to have fun and I don't want to show any type of favoritism by inviting one cousin with a guest and one without just because one is in a relationship ya know? HTH

I have a lot to say on the topic... ha, I think yes that is the polite thing to do (over 18 + guest) but i do think there are exceptions if your concerned about money, if this girl is a work friend for ex and your inviting all your work friends without guests and plan to seat them together I think that can be okay. Or if you decided your inviting all your girlfriends without guests something like that. But if this person is otherwise not going to be with anyone they know, or if everyone the know is invited with a guest then i think they must be invited with a guest as well. I generally think anyone I know in an established relationship over 18 will be invited with a guest.

Also, adding to the post above me, I think it depends on your relationship with the guest, personally I don't think any of my cousins (that im very close too) would be offended if i invited them WITHOUT guests because i know theyre not dating anyone, and invited one cousin WITH a guest when I know she is...

On the other hand - a word to guests- don't bring a guest to a wedding just to bring a guest, if you don't know anyone fine, but if everyone you know will be there you don't need to show off your NON boyfriend! UGH rude!!

This is true... I think it's kind of selfish... but I'd rather them just come... one more person... than have it cause drama and tension and arguments I don't need.

Im inviting pretty much everyone over 18 with a guest. If they dont bring anyone thats fine but if they do thats great too. Many people on my guest list are from different circles in my life and some dont know anyone at the wedding so I would rather people have fun and enjoy themselves instead of feeling shy about not knowing anyone.

according to the etiquette books you are only required to invite a person with a guest if:

1. they don't know anyone at the wedding
2. are living with the person
3. are engaged/married

at my sisters wedding she decided to invite all the cousins with guest and it was so silly because a bunch of them just brought friends (since they weren't dating anyone). IMO I think it's insane to pay for another plate so a cousin (who will know a ton of ppl there) can bring a friend.

proper ettiquete is anyone that is engaged or living together or everyone in ur bridal party should be invited w/ guest.......

Im going to have a problem w/ my wedding bc my brother is going to invite everyone with guest bc he needs the numbers and im not going to invite any1 with guest unless they are engaged or in my bp because im at like 250.

i dont think everyone over 18 should be invited with a guest..especially if they have family members going to...my cousins that are over 18 are not being invited with a guest just to have someone to come because we'll be over 300 people then...i dont think they would expect to either i know i wouldnt at 18 20 lol..unless they are in a serious relationship that you actually know the person...if you can have more people in your count then i guess id go for it
