How do you address an envelope for a single person with an unknown guest? I have a few single friends that aren’t seeing anyone specific. Do I address the envelope Ms. Jane Doe/Mr. Joe Doe and Guest or just address it to them alone and let them write in a guest on the RSVP card? I’ve read mixed beliefs on this. But I really don’t know (I don’t even think they know) who they are planning on bringing.
***I am not doing an inner envelope.

Definitely write 'and guest' so they know they have the option to invite a guest. We will only be inviting those in serious relationships or engaged with guests. FH has a lot of cousins who I know would bring some rando slore and we don't want that and can't afford it.

LOL - I hear you...but the single people we are allowing guests are random friends that don't necessarily know the rest of the party. So the guest can kind of be a buffer for them to feel comfortable. Anyone that knows a bunch of other guests and is single does not get a guest.

We did Ms. Jane Doe and Guest. If I got an envelope addressed to just me I would not assume I was invited with a guest.

We did Ms. Jane Doe & Guest. But for the most part, we only invited people in serious relationships. The only & guests were for our parents friends or co-workers that didn't know many people.

We put 'Mr. John Doe and Guest' exactly like that.

Yeah, if I had people that I was giving a +1 but either they weren't in a current relationship or it was up in the air who they would bring (like elderly folk with multiple children) I put 'and guest.' If you have it just with their name (unless you tell them) then they will assume they don't get a plus one.

Definitely put mrs. Soandso and guest lower case G because guest is not a proper noun.... If you don't put and guest then they will assume only they were invited...

We only have two friends that are Single/not attached. We put Ms. Jane Doe and Guest on the outside because we are also not having an inner envelope, and this way its clear to them they are a plus 1

I would say 'and Guest' on the envelope. I got nervous because FH got a wedding invitation with only his name on it, and no inner envelope. They wrote my name on the rsvp card. Was not a fan of that because for awhile we weren't sure if I was invited!

This! We invited and guest if we knew they were in a long relationship. Our guest count it tight, but I like your idea about having someone they know there too. If you have the space, go for it. Good Luck.

Yea we'll address the envelopes if we know their name - for the unknowns we'll use 'guest'. It makes sense...just most of the etiquette sites said not to - but I think it's outdated, especially since we're not doing the outer/inner envelopes. Thanks everyone!!

I think the problem is the etiquette is geared towards having inner and outer envelopes like you said. I put Ms. Jane Doe and guest' I can't see anyway around it if it's a single friend
