inviting significant other guests. How to address invites?
I am inviting everyone to the wedding with a guest. How do I address invitations, etc. if someone we are inviting has been dating the same person for 4 years? Do I still say on the invite:
Mr. Peter Smith and guest or Mr. peter Smith and Ms. Allen Brown
What if they break up? decisions, decisions....

Unless it's a couple who is engaged, living together or been together for a long time, I'm putting 'and Guest'.

I put on the outer envelope the name of both people if they were living together, otherwise I put the name of my friend, and both first names or you can put the first name and fiancee on the inner envelope. Outer = Miss. Julie Smith Inner= Miss Julie Smith and Mr. John Doe
OR Outer= Miss Julie Smith Mr.John Doe
Or Outer= Miss Juile Smith and Fiancee

I agree with Halloweenbride...the outer envelope with 'And Guest' and put the significant others' name on the inner envelope....I was also told that the inner envelope can have the way you know a person (IE: Mr Jonathan Smith can be Jon Smith since everyone calls him Jon...know what I mean??)

Re: inviting significant other guests. How to address invites?
According to my craine's invite etiquette book, you should address the outer envenlope of the invite to your friend (unless friend and significant other are living together):
Ms. Jane Doe
On inside envelope it should say
Ms. Doe and Guest or Ms. Doe and Mr. John Smith
The idea is that in olden days a butler or servant would receive the delivery or mail or whatever. They would then discard the outside envelope, which was too coarse for the master or mistress of the house to handle. The addressee was presented with the inside envelope only. That is why if the guest doesn't live at the same residence of your friend, his name shouldn't appear on the outside envelope--the butler wouldn't know who that person was!!
Kind of stuffy, but interesting!

My reading of etiquette confirms the previous post (Ms. Jane Doe on outer, Ms. Doe and Guest on inner).
