I'll be watching this closely too.
Buy things that can be eaten w/o much prep= and tons of water... even for boiling and showering.

Re: Irene Prep
Bread, nuts (high protein-- if you cant cook it will keep you fuller longer), granola bars, cereal, peanut butter and jelly, the obvious water, gatorade(in case you get sick), batteries

Stupid question, but why is everyone stocking up on water ? Guess this is my first hurricane experience and I'm clueless. Does the water not work during a storm?
I just went out and bought milk, tape for the windows, rope to tie down my BBQ, pretzels, chips and bread. Going later to get some more stuff

Re: Irene Prep
i would make some hard boiled eggs too those can be a meal without having to be cooked. get things like cereal if you have none in the house. like other posters said things that dont require cooking or refrigeration and can be eaten dry, like granola bars, crackers, cans of tuna stuff like that.
CroatianBride - im not sure if its real bad if the water will be affected by you never know. if there are no more water bottles in the store i would fill a couple old milk jugs or soda bottles tonight from the tap just in case. its better to be prepared.

Water can become contaminated with bacteria after a major storm which can make you sick. Water processing plants might not be working properly, and the DEP will tell us if our water is unsafe to use for drinking, washing, bathing, etc.
I'm filling up as many bottles as I can with tap water now and sticking them in the fridge. If you have a bathtub or a washing machine, you should fill them with water now (not for drinking but for bathing).

And to answer the original question, I bought cereal, bread, nutella (I can live for days on nutella and bread if i need to haha), tuna, chips, cookies and other snacks. (make sure you have a manual can opener!)
Even if this isn't a disastrous as we're fearing, at the very least, you're not going to want to go outside after 5pm today.
I bought some AA batteries yesterday (also try to get D if you can but they were sold out everywhere I went yesterday). I broke out my old walkman for the AM radio in case the power goes out. Have candles and matches and flashlights. Also put your fridge a cold as it can go so if the power does go out, your food will stay colder longer.
I put garbage bags on my windows (I'm in a Zone B). Not as good as plywood but if something hits and cracks a window, the trash bag will help the glass not fly into your home.
The storm is supposed to be the worst between midnight and noon. Make sure you stay away from windows.
Other than that, NYC.gov has pdf documents with good suggestions and guidelines, including what to pack in a 'go bag' in case you need to leave your home in a hurry. Make sure your important documents and irreplaceable valuables are secure, even if this means off of the basement floor.

Where do you live? We straddle zones B and C, so I think we will be ok. The only thing I will do tonight is fill the tub.
