irish band suggestions....

FH is super into his heritage (almost 100% irish) and i really love the heritage too.. we're already having a bagpiper which i was thinking of having him play here comes the bride instead of a pianist or any other musician. we really love irish folk rock and were thinking of having one play, but does anyone have any suggestions and how much they cost?? also if we do that, can we still have a dj? is it stupid to have a dj? TIA xo

Bandpipers typically will not do ceremonies because the acustics. They will play before the ceremony outside or during a dinner entertainment spot.

As for costs i do not know because my family belongs to the emerald society/irish cops so we get it for free for weddings (or so i was told)

As for bands, I have tried this route and no one would respond to me about costs either. I would search for irish bands long island/new york and see what you can get. I did that and emailed a few for a estimate and no one got back to me. You may have more luck!

We're having Celtic Cross play at our wedding. They play a mix of Irish and non-Irish music.

Here's their website:

Celtic Cross

Other bands that I've heard at weddings that play Irish music are Good Clean Fun, Stages and Tommy Mulvihill.

I believe the Boston Burglars are also an Irish band.

Good Clean Fun is very reasonable and they sound great.

WORD! they're palying at my wedding! :)

I would recommend Good Clean Fun, Celtic Cross, Boston Burglars, Andy Cooney's Showband, Shannon Breeze and I am sure there are a million more that I am forgetting.

Depending on when your wedding is, (i.e. afternoon, summer peak season, etc. ) will affect the price. they play everything and if your parents are from Ireland, they know all the dance tunes and things like that you probably grew up with... while still palying regular pop, rock music.

If you're looking for a real traditional music (i.e. fiddle, bodhran, pipes, accordion, etc.) some of these bands do NOT play that type of music and you will have to request that for the wedding specifically or pay someone else to come in and do it. If you want things like Sawdoctors, Pogues, and that type of fun Irish rock, these bands will do it.

I looked at Celtic Cross (close to $5K for my date) Eileen Fogarty and the Irish Showband, about $3500K for my date, and Good Clean Fun (who I booked for $2300)

I would highly suggest getting yourself a copy of the Irish Echo and/or the Irish Voice and looking at the classifieds. All the Irish bands post their contact info. and numbers in there.

Also you can post on the Irish Brides link, we're all immigrants on that thread and could give you more specific help if needed!

HTH!!!!!

I don't think its weird to have a DJ and an Irish band at all but both my cousins had Celtic Cross play at their weddings (they're terrific) and no one missed the DJ. Just check with the reception hall about space if you decide to do bioth. If you have a small dance floor you will lose that much more room.

MY FH is from Ireland and we were going to have a DJ and an Irish band because he wanted to have a band called Gael Force and they don't really do weddings and we needed all the traditional wedding stuff as well. Instead, we're having a live traditional Irish sesiun band (sp?) for the coctail hour and a DJ for the reception who will place some Irish music.

I don't think it's weird, but if you go with a band that plays some Irish music AND all your typical pop/rick/Top 40/wedding stuff, I don't think there is a need for a DJ. I know some brides that have done both, but only when their band really specializes in the Irish stuff and doesn't do the 'standards' very well. I would go with a band that does both well. you'll save money too.
