FH's fam is super Irish and want some Irish music played at the reception (I have no prob with that) and FH's cousins, aunts, sisters, nieces, etc all keep talking about Irish dancing at the wedding (everyone Irish dances at their fam weddings) but I have zero clue how to Irish dance and do not want to be excluded from something at my own wedding.
Does anyone know where I can learn how to Irish dance? His fam cannot teach me bc they all live too far. Some place in Queens would great but I'm not picky!

we just pretend we know what were doing...
i guess you can go to a step dancing school and ask for private lessons or something... but most irish dancers have been doing it since they were really little... its not easy

Re: Irish People
Welllll I took Irish step dancing classes for YEARS. It's not like a waltz or something where you learn one step and that's it. Honestly, I wouldn't bother taking the classes unles it's something you are interested in. But, if you don't want to look clueless on the big day, just jump around a lot and kick your legs out in front of you. You'll look like you know what you're doing, I promise.
We played a lot of Irish music at our wedding and mostly everyone would lock arms and spin each other around or form a circle and all rush toward the middle and back out again. In fact, this is how my bustle was broken!

Re: Irish People
I am Irish and i am not having any Irish Dancing. If you want to have it why not hire someone. It is not that easy to learn and as someone else said most people that can have been doing it years.
Dont worry about not being able to do it. If you have family that can let them do it.

Little Irish step dancers are adorable! I started when I was about 7 years old and did it up until I was 16.
If you really do want to learn some steps though, ask Megan (Im My Own Princess)- she's an Irish dance instructor.

offers private lessons, so you could get an idea of what to do, but to be any good it takes years.

Re: Irish People
They're probably talking about doing set dances at the wedding, such as the Seige of Ennis or Gay Gordon. Both of those would be very easy to pick up. I've never learned step dancing, but can do those two dances. Is there an Irish-American center near you. There's one in Mineola, but I don't know if that would be too difficult for you to get to. If they're not able to offer set dance lessons, find out when their next Ceili (pronounced 'kay lee') is. People are generally very helpful at the Ceilis and would likely be willing to help you learn some of the dances.

So glad I was able to help! I LOVE the Seige of Ennis. Just brace yourself for the spin. The hand hold is key. But some of these little old men there manage to spin you so fast, your feet come up off the floor!

Re: Irish People
lol, as jill said, I'm an irish dance teacher.. where are you located? I've taught brides set dances and basic steps in the past.
you would want to be careful with contacting TCRG cert teachers because right now everyone is in training for 'worlds' and thats a BIG deal and during the summer is competition season... so a lot of them will be hesitant to take on another job.
there are a few places that teach ceili dancing, which is more or less what you would be doing at the wedding. like the siege of ennis, haymakers jig or an rince mor are the most common.
but honestly for those, and most dances you just need to know basics... so 3's, 7's, up and backs and the first jig.
