What do you all think....I've seen some really cool ice luges in the shape of the NYC skyline....it goes with my theme. It is about $500, and FH's friends are big drinkers, so they would want to do shots out of it....
Has anyone had one at their wedding?

Re: Is a NYC Sklyline Ice Luge worth $500?
Being the big drinker that I was in college, I have a lot of experience with ice luges. I think that if you wanted to have it, it should be more of an after-party kind of thing, and not at the reception. Here's why I think (just from experience):
Usually it's a 300-lb block of ice, and it's a pain to set up. I don't know if the company does it for you, but you have to be careful that the structural integrity of the setup is intact so no one gets hurt. You wouldn't want it to slip.
Also, it can get messy. It doesn't melt super quickly, but it does drip a LOT. We always had ours outside on our balcony of the suite, and never inside. The floor could get wet and that may provide slipping hazards or really wet the rug (which would be a mix of water and diluted alcohols, so sort of icky)
You also need someone standing on top of a chair pouring the shots down. So either you'd have to hire someone, or designate someone to do it.
Lastly, it is a popular thing, so large lines form with people waiting to do it. It might become the focus of the night and this may prevent people from dancing.
I think ice luges are a blast, but they are messy and it might take away from the elegance of your reception. But like I said before, if you had it somewhere at an after-party, I think that would be so much fun. But you would still have to think about the things above, like what place would allow a luge, and who would pour the alcohol.
I hope that helped. Later on I should scan some pics of our college ice luge fun. I did some 'bartending' and shot taking in my days!

Like the above post, Beth made some very good points. Keeping what she said in mind, if you really have your heart set on it, I would have the luge set up for either cocktail hour or during your last hour (although people might be driving afterwards.) Good luck!!

Is it possible to have it as just an Ice Sculpture instead the Luge...
I have no doubt that Capitale has experience with this, and will take the appropriate actions and precuations that it doesn't turn into one of those 'frat' situations....I've seen it done at weddings, it was done during the Vienesse Hour.
I wasn't really a fan of it personally (but you didn't ask that) so I'll stop...I think it would look absolutely stunning as an ice sculpture, which is the same as the luge - minus the 'shots' aspect to it.

it's just an idea right now - I'm bored at work, so of course I have to find more ways to spend $$ at the wedding. Yes, an ice sculpture would be better instead of a luge...it's probably not going to happen now that I realize that it seems so high-maintenance. oh, well. The $500 can definitely be used in other places

I had a martini glass ice louge at our martini bar so yes I think it's worth it!
oh wait a minute...it wasn't a louge. more like a sculpture but the liquor went right through it to your glass.
yeah, still worth it.

Of course, it was such high maintenance for us because we had to set up the whole thing ourselves and make the luge. The place just gave us a plain block of ice. Now if the company that does this takes care of all of that, it will be much easier. Like Christine said, Capitale may be experienced in ice luges and can make sure everything is organized and safe. So if you really want it, you could check into it. Those things I listed were just from my experience but may not apply to you if you have someone from a company or Capitale overseeing things. I do think using it during vienesse hour is a good idea. That way its something special at the end. At first I thought you meant to use it during the whole reception.

I was just about to post that too. I remember the watermill doing this as a 'martini' bar. The pictures look spectacular.

Yeah, I got a cool picture (pro) of the whole martini bar thing but of course that, like 90% of my pics aren't scanned. Maybe Santa bought me one for Christmas!

it can be elegant if it is poured into a martini glass and not a shot right off
most ice sculptures are built tocapture the runoff water in a special location and not make a mess -do not worry about that
they can be elegant - and really cool especially having the signautre drink of a manhattan running through it

leonnards has it as part of the cocktail hour if you want it.. i would definatly as the venue about it and get more details if it goes directly intot the glass or if people drink right off the ice

I like that idea a lot. Have a signature drink running through it, and have it poured into a martini glass. That way it is also more sanitary.

i wanted to add a martini luge to my reception, but with a $500 luge, plus an extra 8 pp for martinis (i have about 500 guests), it was just too expensive.

My old boss married a Russian girl and he had one made up in the shape of the Kremlin. It was great, we had a blast with it. I say go for it! I dont think $500 is too expensive.
