What is the tradition behind it? Should I be looking into it? Just wondering! Lisa

Re: Is any one having a grooms cake?
I always thought it was a southern tradition. I will not be having one. Some people have one at the rehearsal dinner.

I don't know what the tradition is or why, but I thought it might be fun to have one, but I dont want it at the wedding, so I'll have it at the RD.

It is a Tradition from the South, remember (I THINK) Steal Magnolias with Julia Roberts and the Armadillo Grooms Cake. I am doing for John at the RD, I am making him an Islander hockey puck with lots of help from my aunt...

Re: Is any one having a grooms cake?
I want to do one at our RD, I just have to figure out exactly what it will look like. I want it to be something FH will love & be so surprized about, so I have to give it a lot of thought.

We're also doing one & serving it as the RD dessert. I'm not sure of all the traditions behind it but I know its usually a dark or chcolate/rum cake

Re: Is any one having a grooms cake?
It is a Southern tradition (I'm from Texas). At the first wedding I went to in NY after I moved here, I asked FH 'Where is the groom's cake?' and he goes 'The what?'
Anyway, in the South they are served at the wedding (guests have a choice b/w wedding cake and groom's cake for dessert - some take both), not at the RD. The cake is almost always a chocolate sheet cake and is usually decorated in icing with something that is is important to the groom. When my cousin got married to a male nurse, his groom's cake had a stethoscope and his name with 'R.N.' in icing after it. When my other cousin got married, his had a giant fish on a fishing pole in icing and it said something like 'YOu landed the best catch.' I will be doing a groom's cake as a surprise to my FH, and I will have his police badge on it in icing.....

Nope. FH wouldn't even know what it is, I didn't until last week when I was talking w/ a Southern co-worker about her wedding.

I will be having one... being I grew up in the south and I think it makes the guy feel special in doing it.... especially when he's surprised with it.

Re: Is any one having a grooms cake?
I decided what I'm going to do for his cake during the RD
At first I was going to copy off of Michele31 and do like a football field. Then I realized this would not help my budget, I'm trying to cut costs here. For a fraction of the price, I'm going to get one of those sheet cakes where they will put a picture(icing picture) from a REAL pic that you give them !! So I'm going to put a picture of Len in his College football uniform, looking soooo cute

I am having one at the RD for FH. He has sooo many things that he loves..so I am just going with this simple one.
We are having one, but to be served at the rehersal dinner. I'm not to sure of the history behind it, all I know is that its very popular in the south.

Yes, we are having one at the reception - my FH is from Texas. I'm thinking maybe a cake in a shape of a cowboy boot.
