Is anyone a working mom who commutes from LI to NYC?

If so...can you tell me how that works out? I am terrified of being gone from my child 14 hours each day, dropping them off with a nanny, not being physically 'there' if something happens, and then coming home exhausted and stressed and not being able to be a good mom. I need some encouragement, otherwise I may put of TTC until I figure out another way to pay the mortgage. TIA!

Re: Is anyone a working mom who commutes from LI to NYC?

I am not one YET, but will be one come February... I often think about not having the energy when I come home, but I think there is a second wind you get when it has to do with your child! DH's schedule changes, so we will not need a nanny because we also have our mothers in the neighborhood... I am upset when I think about missing out on all the FIRSTS - hopefully he'll hold out until mommy gets home! but I know what I have to do and there will be special mommy moments to be had, even if I'm out of the house 12 hours a day! I hope this helped a bit!

Good luck!

Re: Is anyone a working mom who commutes from LI to NYC?

I'm not one yet either but will be one after May - it is SO scarey to think about and sometime I think my DH just has no idea how I am going to feel....But I guess being able to pay the mortgage has to take priority! Although my hours are pretty good now, I have contemplated looking for a job in LI after the baby comes just to have those extra hours at home....

Re: Is anyone a working mom who commutes from LI to NYC?

I know I am not capable of it, I leave the house at 7:10, and get home at 6:30, I get scared of the fact that I will most likely be giving up my job, but I don't think I can leave my baby, might be different if mom or sister could be nanny, but that is not the situation. So we are moving to Florida then TTC. So many ladies I work with are able to do it though, I guess I am just selfishly thinking that I want those 5 years to be baby years, then I will go back to work.

Re: Is anyone a working mom who commutes from LI to NYC?

I actually commute the other way. I live in Queens qand travel to LI. It takes me an hour each way so from 8:00-6:15. I am away from them. I also have a nanny. BUT I got her about three years ago. I worked full time with my older guy and didnt with the second and there is a big difference. My second one and I had more time to bond and it was great. We still have a closeness that is incredible. The nanny comes to me in the morning and leaves when I get home. She even cleans my house for me which for me is great. I do miss th e fact that I didnt spend enough time with my older one and I do regret it now cause I can see the difference between the two children. I know they are two different people with two different attitudes but I feel just not being there was it in my case.

Do what you have to. If that means not working stop. I would love to stop but if not the bills do not get paid. Which I am sure most of you are in the same situation. Just do not knock yourself with a decision. If you stay home you will not regret it. Money wise maybe but emotionally you wont.

Re: Is anyone a working mom who commutes from LI to NYC?

I will be doing it in the spring as well. I know many people who do so I know it can be done but of course it does worry me. Being over an hour and 15 minutes from home - what is something happens??? The thought scares me esp since we don't have many family members who live close and DH and I typically leave the house before 7 and get home around 7ish on a regular day....We'll see come spring how it works out - many people do it - just a little scary to me when I let myself dwell on it.
