Is anyone else dreading the paperwork to change their name?

I want to make my maiden name a middle name, but I'm haering I have to go to court to do it. I want to keep my car insurance upstate, but I can't with a maried last name.

I know it's for selfish reasons, but insurance is expensive down here!

Any newleyweds not even change their name yet? I'm not gonna do it till after the wedding.....

My insurance increased $4k when I moved it down here. Oh...that was for a 6mth period too!

BUT I will say I'm saving 'TONS OF MONEY ON MY CAR INSURANCE' by being rated as married. I have Allstate and have been with them for years. I had tickets and an accident, which brought the surcharges up, but now I'm saving bundles.

I was thinking of putting my car in my FH's name since we have to put each other on our policy anyway, so I guess I should get those #s together before I do all this name change headache nonsense!

I find it a bit daunting just because I don't actually know the process... I want to keep my middle and maiden name and add fh's name on legally at the end. My family actually calls me by my middle name, so I can't drop it and I want to use my maiden name professionally. WHY DON'T GUYS HAVE TO DEAL WITH THIS!?!?!?

Anyway....I am going to do the court thing too, but have no idea what the process is... Guess we'll find out, but yet, I am sort of dreading it in a way....

It's not as bad as you're thinking.

As far as the names, you don't have to go to court to keep your name. When you fill out the paperwork for the license (within 60 days of your wedding), you 'choose' the new name. As long as it is some form of yours and DH's name, you're fine. Also, you can't start changing your name until after the wedding because you need copies of the marriage certificate (which is sent to you post-wedding by the state) to do so.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Eileen, So, even though my middle name is already on my license, I can add another middle name (my maiden name)? If so, then I'm in!

I am in the same exact situation! I want to keep my middle name and maiden name and legally add on FH's last name, but not use it professionally or anything.

My friend had to go to court to put her old last name as her middle name, although if she wanted to hypenate she wouldn't have had to...

Yeah - all it asks for is your new name. So, if you write it in First Name Middle Name Maiden Name Married Name there's no reason they won't accept that. You can then use it however you want. I have a lot of friends that did this and then were able to maintain their maiden name at work while using their married name socially.

I'm dreading changing my name, period I like my last name. it will be so weird to have a different one.

at least it will be a nice last name though.

Re: Is anyone else dreading the paperwork to change their name?

my sister now uses her maiden name as her middle name and she changed her ss card, then her passport - then her license. She said that there was someone else trying to do exactly what she was doing at the DMV and was running into some problems - but since she had her passport with her new name on it there was no trouble.

I hope it's an easy, pain free process for you!
