well not me, but i think FMIL is having a hard time. FH is her baby and her 2 older kids havent been married yet so I think she is having a hard time letting go of him.

Yes!!! I know where you are coming from totally. My dad is having the WORSE time letting go, and my mom is laying the guilt trip heavy on me for his bad mood. Once the wedding is over and once they see that you are extremly happy, it should subside...at least thats what I am hoping for...

Not my parents either, but FMIL is having an extremely hard time letting go of her son. She flipped out when I said we were going to spend xmas eve with my family even though were going to her house for thanksgiving.

If she's all my herself, maybe talk to you FH about inviting her for one holiday to his parents home so he doesn't have to give up his family all the time. I know when we go to my dad's sisters for holidays, my mom's mom is always invited since otherwise she would be all alone. If you would be open to it, it could alleviate some of the pressure.

my mom sounds similar-shes veryyyyy reluctant to give up the holidays (any of them) bc fh has a bigger family-i guess in her mind 2 less people isnt as big of a deal to them...

i think its hard for her bc im the oldest...so this is the first time she's having to deal with it

i'm so sorry you're going through this!! i haven't really had this experience with my family, but definitely with fh's. they freak out whenever he doesn't spend enough time with them, and holidays have always been a major problem. however, after 6 years of this, it seems we've finally come to agreements, sharing holidays, spending part of the time in each place, etc. it su cks your mom is having trouble with this and taking it out on you, but it's a hard thing, especially since it's just the two of you...i think if you just give her more time she'll come around. obviously, that's not easy, though!! good luck!!

I can't say I'm having this problem, but we've split our holidays for the past 3 years. It's all a matter of making sure that everyone at least gets equal amounts of time.

Can your mom spend some of the holidays with you at FH's family?

Re: Is anyone else's family

im an only child and yet my mom is more cooperative of letting me go on holidays than FMIL is of FH...

FH has 3 siblings, all are married w/kids...u think she'd be content to let FH be with me for ONE holiday, but no...

i cant even get into that drama right now...FILs have been testing mine and FHs relationship HARDCORE the last couple of weeks...we'll make it through anything if we make it til the wedding w/how they're acting...

But adriana, is ur mom close with or at least amicable with FHs family? Cuz when my parents are going to be alone on holidays, FMIL has invited them over...like last easter, my parents came w/me to FMILs house...i dont know wut kind of relationship your parents have wit each other but if it's a good one, maybe try 2 see if FH will have his parents extend an invite (although im assuming his parents have the holiday, if it is other relatives like an aunt or something that is more far fetched) unfortunately at a certain point we have to put our feet down...this year, you're not married yet, but explain to your mom that this time next year, you will be, and holidays like thanksgiving that are one day you will be going back and forth (one year w/her, one year w/FH family) so she needs to get used t othe idea sooner rather than later!

Re: Is anyone else's family

I'm an only child of divorced parents so my mom is super needy. It works out though because FH's family is really unconventional. Everyone will be doing their own thing. His mom is staying in Florida and I guess he brother is keeping himself occupied - who knows!

But I have a feeling we'll never spend a holiday without my mom from here on out...

Re: Is anyone else's family

My mom has been picking fights about EVERYTHING. It's so strange because I've moved far away from home when I was 17, and we've been close this whole time (still are, she just now has a temper). She gets upset with everything. For instance, I don't have off on Dec. 23rd, so FH and I are going to drive to FFIL's house for Christmas Eve (we live in Ohio). She's so upset that we aren't driving the whole 12-13 hours to her house that night to go to church with her (FH's family is Jewish), and she said that I probably just like his family better. She's so odd, I hope that phase ends quickly.

ITA with everyone above.

It's SO hard but your mom needs to understand that you are starting your own family.

My FH is an only child, so my parents have invited his over for Thanksgiving - is that something that your FH's parents could do so that everyone's together??

I feel your pain. My mom likes to make crazy statements as well followed by JUST KIDDING. I hate that. I'm sure she doesn't mean it and it's just her inner monologue. I chalk it up to my mom's hormones.

Thanks girls.

It really helps A LOT to know that i'm really not the only one. I feel like it would be so much easier if there was someone else in the house with us..
oh the joys of being an only child. You get all the good but get ALL the bad.

Exactly. I wish I had a sibling just to commiserate with, but I usually talk about it with my other friends who are also only children.
