I found out that when I get pregrant I will be at risk. I was just DX with Prothrombin A mutuant, which means that my body can reproduce blood clots, which means I am at risk for blood clots. Im scared.

Re: Is anyone going to be AT RISK
I was already told my by doctors that I will be considered a high risk pregnancy. Hopefully that means I'll just have be monitored more closely.

Once over 35 I think you are assigned to a higher risk category. I am 35 and my docs insists on performing an amniocentesis when the time comes. I am totally ok with that.

I'm not so sure you are automatically at risk over 35. I think this has more to do with any health conditions you may have or develop during pregnancy.
I have epilepsy, so I will be at at risk preganancy, though my doctor noted I am fairly low risk.

Re: Is anyone going to be AT RISK
I don't know if I will be specifically put into a different risk category but I will need to have a C-section. I had fibroid and endometriosis surgery with some complications. There is a small risk of uterine rupture during childbirth after such a surgery. I have heard that the C-section is nothing compared to the surgery that I have already had, so it does not worry me.

Re: Is anyone going to be AT RISK
I will be considered at risk as FH's sister was born with a heart defect. Also, my mother had toxemia when she was pregnant with me - but that can also be more controlled of my part. I will just have to make sure that one of my sisters (both are RNs) take my blood pressure weekly.
Plus, being that I am Italian and he is Greek, we will need to be screened for thalassemia, which is at a higher prevalence in our ethnic populations

Re: Is anyone going to be AT RISK
Yes, I will be at risk. I have epilepsy, so I already know I will fall into this category. I'm kind of scared also, and as much as I want to have a baby, I feel this curious twinge of relief when a month comes and I have MF again. I guess the good news is that epilepsy generally isn't inherited (no one in my family has it). The main problem is the risk of having seizures while pregnant, and the medication.

Re: Is anyone going to be AT RISK
I'm hear to calm you all down...
One: I have the prothrombosis mutation too. I also have a strand of Factor 5 gene mutation - an additional clotting gene... so I'm a double whammy. I saw a Stroke/anticoagulation specialist out of Mt. Sinai hospital (on a side note: one of the best high risk maternity hospitals BTW) - he said he'd be happy to work with my obstetrician when I'm PG, BUT he sees no reason for me to be concerned since I've never had a clot thus far - most people who have these genetic defects have no idea that they have them their whole lives. My mom's almost 60 and smokes and just found out - only b/c I asked her to get tested to aleviate my fears which were the exact one's you had). My birth control pill was making me sick - causing stroke like symptoms and my mom had a stroke early on so I had the million dollar blood work up. If you wan to talk to my stroke doctor (anticoagulation) in NYC - fm me. You have a higher risk of having a stroke or a leg clot during the end of pregnancy and during childbirth... however, you will be monitored to the heavens... you can always be given Herperin (sp?) shots - you have to self administer them, but it's a blood thinner that they give PG women. Risks are minimal to the unborn baby - doesn't mean no risks, but you and your OB will be spending a lot of time together...
As for seizures - my mom has had them all her life and went misdiagnosed as migraines for a long time... long of the short... she has 2 healthy girls (well, we're a little nuts). If my little mom can get through all these obstacles, PLUS being a smoker... I'm sure it will work out fine, just listen to your doctor and follow his/her advice.
As for over 35... I'm an unmarried 33 y.o. and I worry about this to death b/c I will definitely be over 35 when I have my babies and I do not regret not having them sooner. My best friend is PG and she will be over 35 when she delivers so guess what - she is in the high risk catagory. She had her amnio, etc... she has to go to the doc more often then she did with her first child. Even her older sister who was 39 with her first and 42 with her second (that's right for all those you can't have kids over 35 nuts out there). She told me they just make you go to the doc a lot - and you will have an amnio - you get to do bedrest for 3 days - there's a reason for DH's to pamper the crap out of us...
DONT WORRY!!! Society just likes to scare women... You met Mr. Right a little later in life or you focused on yourself/career first... don't panic... I've even heard that while fertility drops between 35 and 40, it goes up again after 40 - not sure how fact based that is, but it makes sense b/c most people stop trying so hard after 40. I know a freaking out 27 y.o. who is having problems getting PG, but if she would relax and just have fun doing the deed with hubby she'd probably get the results she wants. If you have an actual medical condition that prevents PG, then you work with a specialist or fertility doctor. I just think we ladies worry too much b/c we get a lot of pressure....

Re: Is anyone going to be AT RISK
Just a question.
How did you ladies find out all this info about yourself? Was it all done through a blood test??
