FH hates his job, and i suggested he go back to school for his masters and change careers...he decided he'd like to be a guidance counselor, but i feel like that is so hard to get a job in...aren't there very few positions? What do you guys think? Should he instead look into some other type of counseling? I feel so bad that he's miserable at work every day...help! What careers have lots of openings? He wants to get a degree in something that won't go to waste bc it'll be impossible to find something...TIA!

Guidance Counselor is probably one of the most competitive fields out there. I am an academic advisor and most of my colleagues have counseling degrees that they are not using because the field is so saturated on Long Island.
Perhaps an MSW degree and you can do social work for the school? Or even a school psychologist. Good Luck!

I am a freshman admissions counselor at a college...the pay is not that great but I enjoy my job...counseling propective students, recuitement, contacting students, registering students, etc... If he's interested in working in a college enviroment, he can go into higher education...

Hmmmm, wonder about Pa.!! Debi is going back to school in a few yrs. for her Masters to be a Guidance Counselor. Her college internship, for her B.S. in Human Dev. and Family Studies, was at a local HS Guidance office. I'll say something to her. Mary MOB

I have been a Guidance Counselor on Long Island for the past 8 years. It is definitely a competitive field to get a job in, but men definitely have a good shot, they are in demand!!!! FM me with any questions.

Re: is anyone here a school guidance counselor?
I'm a guidance counselor, and yes, the job market is very tight. LI schools can see 400 resumes for a single position, and top (or even decent) schools in NYC are similar. My first job was on LI, but it was a leave-replacement position, and I was paid about $80 a day w/o benefits. My second job was in NYC (Queens) and I've been there ever since.
Social Work is sort of similar, and his job market is wider... you can work in hospitals, agencies, and schools.School social workers get to do way more actual counseling tha GCs.
