I'm obsessed with Suze Orman!! Seriousy her book 'The money book for the young fabulous and broke' changed my life 4 years ago.
That couple so ridiculous, but I feel bad for them getting their wedding party dreams crushed.

Yeah, it was sad that their dreams were crushed but you are obviously living beyond your means if at the end of the month you have less than $200 - I don't care if you make $10,000 a month or $1,000.

I know a few people in this situtation and you would be surprised but a lot of them are young medical residents or lawyers who have 200K in education debt which requires huge monthly payments. Education in this country is very expensive and part of the reason I think some high income people barely get by.

Also, some people are paying over $3K per month on their mortgages alone, plus all other bills, food, etc.

I have over 160K in student loans and FH has about 100K so we are in a tough situation so not everyone in these situations are out shopping spending their money....

Re: Is anyone watching Oprah?
I know many people in situations like this. The look like they are loaded because they spend on clothes, cars, and electronics but when all is said and done, they don't have ANYTHING in the bank and even though they have the glitzy stuff, what good is it when you don't have any savings or a house? I used to work with a guy who's wife made 6 figures and so did he. He lived in a great neighborhood and we were having a convo one day. He said even though they have nice cars, nice houses, and stuff like that- once the bills are paid, they really don't have much left. He gave me advice to never live like that. I don't plan to, LOL but I do appreciate that advice.
I don't get why people spend beyond their means. It's the reason why we are in the economic crisis in the first place...
Student loans is one thing though- that at least will be paid off with big salaries.

I think student loan debt isn't so bad..one my best friends is in almost 300k school debt (grad school, law school, all out of state), and living single in NYC & has a very low interest rate and is fine. As long as you budget out its pretty manageable.
Even Suze Orman will tell you student loan debt isn't nearly as bad as credit card debt.

I agree. I am not saying it is bad debt - just that there are people paying 2k a month just for student loans. The federal stuff is low interest but private grad school loans generally have higher rates.

I agree, yes school loans aren't considered bad debt but at the end of the day it's still money you have to pay. So on paper looks ok but hurts your pockets. During the planning DH was still paying off his college loans and that did effect things alot. Thats money we could've used towards the wedding. It was still money he had to shell out each month for and wasn't that low either. Before the wedding though and having student loans it wasn't that bad. So if youre single it is a bit easier but once you throw a wedding to the mix, becomes difficult.
I am curious, does this couple make $8k a month combined before or after taxes. If its before taxes then that is a huge difference bc after taxes can be half of that so that would explain why they would only have $200 a month left after all their other expenses.

This couple had over $16,000 worth of credit card debt... not student loans, CREDIT CARD debt. How do you let things get that bad?

Thank you for saying that. After 1200 in loan payments and 3000 in mortgage + utilities (at the least), your essentially left with less money than the average minimum wage employee.

Re: Is anyone watching Oprah?
I watched it also---
I know people that are in the situation where they really aren't saving but living month to month. I am one of them and have NO Debt. So beside that...
What bothered me about them is that she lied to him about her credit card debt. That's just wrong. Also neither one of them reseached anything about having a wedding. He only wanted to spend 5,000 which is not possible unless you elope or have it in the backyard. They both need to discuss more together and look into things.
