I'm on the fence about making one, but I'm not very crafty so I figured I might just spend the $60-$85 for a FTMB box.
Did you find the savings was worth DIY??
TIA!!!!

Re: Is DIY card box worth it??
It depends on how not crafty you are and have an idea of what you want. To make one yourself it will be about $20 to $30 max. I love to DIY and if its not perfect I dont mind as much as I did it myself but I also have saved lots of money so it depends.
If you find a pic of what you like and you can cut and glue then you can diy a cardbox.
Below are directions:
1) Buy hat boxes or plain boxes at any craft stores. 2) Cut a hole in the box that you want the cards to be inserted in. 3) Once you decide where you are going to place your slot, you must cut holes in the bottom on that box and any boxes below it so that the cards can fall to the bottom. Make sure and leave ½' or ¼' edge on the bottom of the box so that you can glue it to the next box. 4) After you have all the boxes cut you can begin covering them with paper. With the larger boxes I recommend gift wrap paper. 5) Once your boxes are covered, glue them together. 6) Now you can begin decorating them with ribbon, silk flowers, tulle bows or even feathers.

Re: Is DIY card box worth it??
I totally think its worth it! I am making mine this weekend. I just didn't think it was a necessary expense to purchase one that was already made for $60-$200...IMO, it is a waste of money on something you are going to use once.
I am making mine using a big/tall box I got at my shower from BBB. I am going to cut a slit in the top for the cards, cover it in fabric and decorate it. I am having a beach wedding so I bought shells, sand dollars and starfish at AC Moore. I think I spent $15 on that stuff. So all together the cardbox is only going to cost me about $25.

If you enjoy DIY projects, definitely...it saves money and it's an excuse to 'make something'- I love crafty projects, so I couldn't wait to make my own wedding things...but if you don't enjoy things like that then no. You probably won't feel as if the money is worth your time....they're definitely time-consuming especially since it's for your wedding and you want it to come out perfectly

I like the idea of doing it myself but if you´d rather buy them there are other alternatives at lower prices. Walmart had one that I think was about $15. I´m sure there are other places you could get one for close to that. The thing is they will probably be much simpler. You have to weigh out teh pros and cons of each option.

I really wanted a photo cardbox but to buy them is like $80...and you still have to put it together! Ours cost like $25 (the most expensive part was printing the 8x10 photos!) and while it took all day, we love being able to say we made it and I love how it came out! And we saved a lot of $$!
I have pics in my DIY album

FH made ours. yes he really did paint all that!!! But you don't need that kind of talent- and it can be fun. Just remember every penny you're saving can go toward other things you need. that unfinished box was $20 at AC Moore.
Totally worth it...we did ours for WAY cheaper and it came out just as good (if not better, if i do say so myself!) Pics in album of that almost completed one...we added a bit more to the top but this was the basic idea!

Honestly, so many people didn't even know we HAD a gift box!!! They wanted to give us the envelopes even when I pointed them towards it!
So IMHO, I say go with the most minimalist sort of thing you can do that you're pleased with. It's not worth spending more than you can afford or need to on.

ITA. I had completely forgotten about getting a cardbox and there was no way I was going to try to make one. People just handed us envelopes and we stuck them in our luggage that was in the locked bridal suite. But this is all because of laziness since I didn't even purchase a special bag for them...so maybe my opinion isn't very helpful!

It seems like it would be a lot of work but worth it if you can keep the costs down. I love the ones at forthemodernbride.com but they are expensive IMO. I found boxes already decorated at the Christmas Tree Shop and then cut holes and glued them together. IT worked out nicely because I didn;t have to worry about decorating it.

ITA with this. So many people don't even know what a card box is and are not comfortable with just depositing the card and gift into a box. Even when I went to a wedding I wanted to hand the envelope to the couple because I was wary of putting it in a box.
