The airfare is much cheaper. We are thinking of either Italy or France. There are other places I'd rather go but those are DH's top choices -- it doesn't matter much to me where in Europe we go.
Any thoughts on either country?

Re: Is end of March too cold in Europe?
I went to Italy in March in '97. It was kind of chilly- not too bad though. I wore jeans and a sweater everyday, usually with a light jacket.
I've never been to France but I absolutely loved Italy

I like travelling in Europe in the off season - Summer is too crowded. I've been to France in February and had gorgeous weather - like 65 degrees. Total anomaly I think, but it's like here - you could get freezing or you could get decent temps (all in the same week).

I was in barcelona (northeastern spain) and france in late march/.early april '99, the weather was AMAZING. it was about 70 degrees and sunny the ENTIRE time! We even managed to eke out a beach day!
