Our families are doing a grab bag (pick a name out of a hat and buy for them ONLY). Instead of buying gifts, why doesn't everyone just go out to dinner once?

Nope. FH and I ignoring XMas this year. And my family understands. Our wedding is a few weeks after and we have way too many deposits to pay.

I lucked out. I went on a full week business trip two weeks ago at the last minute to cover for someone so I got a compenstation for it. That is allowing me to spend on Christmas. I can't go over board like I usually do but I can still shop without worrying about every cent.

FH and I put a cap on it -- $50 each (which really means $100).

Re: is everyone able to???

we are giving a gift to everyone we are close to.
i don't think it's fair to not give someone else a gift because I want something expensive.
I'm not saying that you're wrong or that you're a bad person. It's just my personal opinion.
I'd rather be able to celebrate the holidays than spend an extra few days in Jamaica.
(again not saying that you don't want that)

Our families do not come from money. Some years they are more comfortable than others, but never to the point where it's easy to do Christmas. If our parents could always provide a 'normal' holiday for us, we're going to do the same.

Although I told my parents not to give me anything this year, the wedding is gift enough till the end of time.

We also won't be going as overboard as usual... but hopefully no one will really notice.

Do something sweet, bake that's what I'm doing. We really just can't afford it. And don't feel bad people understand!

This might sound really lame but why don't you do something like bake them cookies??

Its cheap, you could wrap them up really pretty in a cute festive box or red and green tissue paper, and they'll appreciate the fact that you took time out of your day to do it just for them.

And if you want you could buy one of those x-mas boxed card sets and write out cards to everyone to go with the cookies, so you add another personal touch.

I dunno, to me, Cookies = LOVE

We are not splurging as much as in the past. We are putting a cap on all the gifts for people.

I budgeted christmas/anniversaries and birthdays into my saving for the wedding.

No, but its our daughter's first real Christmas since last year she was only 3 months old....
We arent buying for anyone or each other ( though Im sure he will get me something even though I strictly told him not to) just the baby..... Even with money beyond tight, she will have a BIG Christmas always, I refuse for her to get nothing......

Re: is everyone able to???

FH and I actually set our Christmas budget last night. We're spending half of what we spent last year on each other, and no more than $50 per parent and each of us has 1 sibling.

Everyone knows money is tight for us, but we're trying to be money smart AND not neglect our families during the holidays.

This is the first year we aren't buying gifts either. Me and my finacee are buying for my parents but not my brothers/aunt/uncles. I will be buying for my 2 cousins and that is all. Oh well. I have to many payments due in January. It isn't a big deal anyways. YEA

Unfortunately, we are doing gifts as every year
Spending the same amounts--and I am not happy about it and FH knows it--I said after the wedding--that is it, I want a house, people are getting nothing and they are going to like it
