Is FH seeing you b4 the wedding ceremony?

Original post by tiffandmatt

I've been to a lot of weddings recently, where most of the brides and grooms are getting some pictures taken together before the cemeony. Is anyone still doing the traditional FH not seeing you until you are walking down the aisle at the cememony? I'm not doing it this way, but is there a benifit to doing it this way?

Yes FH and I will see each other. We are Jewish and it is one of our marriage customs.

after being on these boards for so long it's really interesting learning about different wedding customs!

Basically it dates back to bible times when Jacob sought to marry Rachel. After the marriage took place, Jacob learned that his bride was actually Rachel's older sister Leah who was heavily veiled - their father wanted the older sister married first. Jacob ended up marrying Rachel anyway (bible times permitted this) and thus the Jewish tradition of the Bedeken was created. Typically done in Orthodox communities, the bride sits with her family and/or attendants and the groom with is entourage comes to make sure she is the 'right person' so that fateful error of Jacob is not repeated. The reform and Conservative movements do a more simplified version as the MOB and MOG typically do thie veiling in the Rabbi's office. That is why a Jewish bride will ALWAYS wear a veil to cover her face.

Jewish brides and grooms also sign the marriage contract (Ketubah) before they walk down the aisle escorted by BOTH of their parents. So they HAVE to see each other before hand.

It makes things easier for us as there is no question that we will NOT miss our cocktail hour by taking pictures. That is all done before guests arrive. After our first private meal alone (of maybe an hors' deurve or two) in a ritual called Yichud (lasting 5-10 minutes tops) we will join the party. This occurs right after the ceremony so there is no receiving line either. MORE PIGS IN A BLANKET FOR ME!!!!

This is still be debated between FH & me. He wants to do pics before so he doesn't miss CH and we can greet guests instead of spending all of dinner doing table rounds. I want that moment when he sees me coming down the aisle.

However, a photographer I met with pointed out to me that 'the moment' will be witnessed by every single guest and might not be the full blown reaction I am hoping for (or expecting), and by doing pictures in advance I will get that moment in private just for me without having to share. Based on this I am reconsidering.

My FH and I were worried about missing our CH...we were talking about it this very weekend. We were considering paying addt'l for an open bar to 'create' a 1/2 hour before the ceremoney ends and the CH begins.

After reading these posts...we have decided to definitely take our pictures before the ceremony. We are both very comfortable with this and love the idea. Of course, it took you wonderful ladies of liweddings to raise the idea.

I'm so excited! One less issue I have to worry about!!!

I'm still old-fashioned, there's no way I'm seeing FH before the ceremony.

We had our ceremony and reception at the same place and I did not see DH until the doors opened at the church. It was awesome. Sure we missed some of the cocktail hour but I didn't care.

No. AND YES we are taking pics before the ceremony...just not together. We're taking our 'together' pics during CH... We're hoping to get in on some of our CH, which is the reason we extended it an extra half hour.

We're seeing each other beforehand because we want to enjoy our wedding and get the pics out of the way.

yup - we're doing pics before so we can make our rounds at the cocktail hour instead of taking pics and then we can enjoy the reception
