I always said pocketbook, or really, pock-a-book. I lived in CA for a long time, where they all say purse and when I busted out 'pocketbook' I was teased incessantly.

I say purse. I never ever say pocketbook, I do not know why I think it sounds strange. I could understand why people think purse sounds old though.
