....in US currency or foreign currency. I usually backpack when I travel and don't bother with them (I transfer cash to local currency when I need to)...but we leave for 3 weeks in Fiji and DH is off to by travellers cheques, and I have no idea what to tell him.

Re: Is it better to buy travelers cheques..
I NEVER use travellers checks. When I travel abroad, I just take out cash at ATMs (in the local currency) and use my credit cards for purchases when I can. That way get the best exchange rate and lowest fees, in most cases.
With ATMs around the world, I don't see the point of traveller's checks anymore.

Travelers cheques are protected in case they are stolen...always good to have some on you.

Unfortunately, Lisa, we'll be heading into some pretty rural areas, where we may not have access to an ATM that will accomodate us. But there is usually a village store that will take travelers checks. We also have learned that in some areas of Fiji ATMs don't exist at all but expats will provide an exchange of travellers checks (and these are covered if lost).

What I really need to know is if we will be penalized when we get back if we buy foreign currency?
