Is it common to spend your anniversary with your in-laws?

Is it common to spend your anniversary with your in-laws?

My in-laws just called us asking if we would visit them on our anniversary. I'm sure they have good intentions. But DH and I already have plans. I explained this to them, and they sounded very disappointed. Is it custom to visit family for a first anniversary? Or every anniversary? My parents divorced before I knew what an anniversary was. So I'm not familiar with the ET.

we celebrated our 1st anniv alone.
unless it was a big milestone year (like 10, 25, 50 etc) and there was a party involved, i wouldnt want to spend any anniv w/ anyone but DH.

Thats how I feel. Thank you. I thought that was a little weird. My Dh already called them to inform them, we're visiting them on Sunday (the day after.)

UM lemme think...

NO.

I am trying to understand how any family can expect a couple to spend a first anniversary with anyone other than themselves. That blows me away.

Me too. But I wasn't sure if that was common in some types of families. Thanks girls. You came to the rescue again.

Definitely not. My IL's mentioned that they would like to take us for dinner for our anniversary, but I don't think they were implying that we would go with the ON our anniversary. Now you got me thinking! DH and I have plans to spend the weekend alone. Any celebrating with family will have to take place the day/days after.

I believe that your first anniversary should be spent alone...with each other. I have an annoying family that celebrates EVERY single birthday but anniversaries (except for mom & dad and the grandparents) are not celebrated with a party or get together. Quite frankly, it's a day for you and your hubby to spend together, celebrate and reflect on surviving another year together. LOL.

This is how I feel too.....however, we share our annv. with my ILs, so I'm sure there will come a time where the 4 of us will celebrate together.

We were alone on our anniversay, the whole weekend, that's what we wanted.

However, the week before we did go over to my mom's for dinner and she gave us an anniversary gift.
