The airport in New Orleans is back to running commercial flights. Some business (in the French Quarter I think) are going to be opening this weekend ...
who is flying there NOW?? Would you want to vacation there NOW??
I'm all for getting the area up & running as soon as possible but I can't understand why they would want people/tourists around while parts are still under water and there's clean-up to be done. Just seems totally bizarre to me.

I don't think anybody is planning on vacationing there.....I think it's more for business travelers having to get out or in.
I could be wrong, but the city profits from the airport being open.

Re: Is it just me?
new orleans' livelihood is mostly due to tourism so all new orleanians can do is focus on getting back to 'normal' as downtown manhattan did after 9/11. it's the smart thing to do. not only to regain their city back physically & financially but also their spirits. and with the airport back in business would get the ball rolling. i wish them lots of patience and luck.

But where are the business travellers going? To the blownout hotels by the Superdome? To the convention center? Obviously not ... I don't know ... who's working at the airport? I'd assume most of these people have lost their homes ...

I'm glad the planes will be flying in to save the animals. They had one plane chartered just for dogs but it had to fly into LA and there were all restrictions and they couldn't carry nearly as many dogs as it could have fit.

Re: Is it just me?
altho hurricane katrina obliterated the city, things still go on. there may be consultants flying in to lend a helping hand. for instance pitching ideas on how to make the city become what it used to be and better. there are volunteers from all over the world driving/flying/etx in to lend some support. and they're gonna want to see New Orleans. and they're gonna be hungry also.. when there's a need for something there's a need for someone to provide this material. and where are they staying? i don't know but so far it's working out with little means avail. there are still people within the city who are fortunate to still have a job (at the airport, restaurants, etx). i don't want to be blunt but they have to move on and with businesses reopening is being proactive. this is a very good thing.. very great news. altho it's little by little they have to start somewhere and starting is the key.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against progress there ... I just find it odd with bodies still needing to be removed, electricity to be restored, etc and water still to be pumped out that the airport is open to COMMERCIAL flights ...

Re: Is it just me?
Wendy, I think some of thr areas just outside of NO aren't that bad.
The Airport is ( like in most cities) in an outlying area also, so people fly into NO, to get to the other areas. People who left, may be coming back to their homes in those areas & peopel invloved the rescue & cleanup efforts probabaly have been flying into other cities & driving & can now fly directly to NO.
The French Quarter wasn't as badly damaged as the rest of the city, since it sits on higher ground, but I thought the gov't wanted it totally evacuated too.

That's true, apparently the area where the rich people live is on higher ground (so they look down on the poor?), and was not bad at all. Many of those residents refused to leave but have their own generators...
