FH's sister lives in Va. Beach and is a single mom of a 2 year old (His sister is 32). She is there alone, has no family there (she moved there to be with her then boyfriend) and does not have much $$ at all. FH's mother sends her $$ (actually transfers it into her savings acct) every month or so, and his sister has called us a # of times asking for $$ (not to BORROW, to keep). She is in a tough spot, so if we have a few extra dollars, we'll send it to help her out. We send Christmas and birthday gifts for her and the baby (actually THIS year she called to tell FH what his neice wants from him) and we never ever see a friggen CARD.
The only reason I got to thinking of this is because she called the other night as I was wrapping gifts and she said that Arainna (her daughter) has 21 Christmas gifts from her! I think at the VERY least she could send a card, or a $5 gift to FBIL's kids (her 2 neices)
I know I might sound like a Beotch becasue she doesn't have $$, but am I off base???

21 gifts? They can at least send a card or a toy for your son!

You are not wrong- I would appreciate even a card as well!!! It is the least she can do, and from what I remember, not very costly!!! I would be fuming!! She sounds a little ungrateful to me. JMO

21 gifts and she has the nerve to ask for money??? I don't think you are wrong at all. It sounds like she doesn't understand the concept of gratitude.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure these gifts are by no means extravagant...but again, a card would be nice...?

Re: Is it me...be HONEST (LOOONG!)
Even if she only spent $10 per gift, that's over $200 in gifts. Don't get me wrong, I don't think her daughter should suffer because she's in a rough financial position, but no kid, IMO, needs 21 gifts, especially when money is being asked for (not BORROWED) from others, presumably to pay living expenses. She should have kept her mouth shut AND given a card.
this sounds like my SIL...never a card once...not even for our wedding!!! and I send her kids little gifts every holiday (like candy for easter and halloween)
DH tells me that she was always known as the 'rich girl' in their small town...manners do not come with money though!!!

It doesnt cost much to send a card, even a thank you card. It seems kind of ungrateful in a way. Almost like it all should be given to her. It seems like she is a very taken care of woman.

I'm with ya Stacy. That's not right. I have an uncle who lives in VA beach who fits this description to a T. Maybe there's something in the air down there

Re: Is it me...be HONEST (LOOONG!)
What??? I would assume you and your FI and your FMIL send her money so she can make ends meet, not to buy gifts for her daughter.
I don't think I ever got 21 gifts at once, even if I had a party thrown for me!
And to go around telling you this yet can't seem to find the $1 to send a Christmas card?
I know I might sound like a Beotch becasue she doesn't have $$
Sounds like she's got plenty if she's buying her daughter 21 gifts. Some people don't get it. Sorry that she's being like this.

Re: Is it me...be HONEST (LOOONG!)
hrmph Wow.. gutsy gal.
My brother is in a tough spot right now. I love my nephew to death. I am one of those siblings (even tho Im younger) who supports the family. I send money over there knowing I'll never see it again. I also buy gifts for my nephew and before the wedding planning this kid got a LOT of stuff. It's curtailed a bit since.
I do NOT get a single card or even a phone call from my own brother. On my Birthday, Christmas or even when he gets the gifts or money!
Oddly enough, Im not offended. I brother works long hard hours in a packaging plant. I know it sounds like Im letting him take advantage of me, but I just do this for my nephew not necessarily for my brother. (I should add my brother and I are extra close but never call eachother much)
I don't think you're wrong. I call my brother and ask what Ian wants he never calls me to say 'Ronica.. Ian wants...blah blah' that takes some nerve. Then bragging about how many gifts the girl has and then to basically say 'where's yours' my god. Balls of pure ignorant steel.

Well, I discussed this with FH last night and he actually agreed with me! (I was pretty shocked!)
Maybe I've knocked some sense into that boy after all

You are not wrong at all. I'd be POed. Have you thought about saying something to her about it?
It's a tough one, I know. Some people have some nerve and sucks when they are family!
