Is it possible to have two drastically different size dogs?

I want a teacup maltese...hubby wants something like a lab. I''m worried that the larger dog might hurt the little one since the teacups are so fragile. Has anyone had two different size dogs?

Re: Is it possible to have two drastically different size dogs?

actually, theres no such thing as a 'teacup' dog ....
i had a lab, chihuahua and minpin at the same time... its not a problem,as long as the big one is gentle towards the pup....

now the lab lives with my mom and she has a 7 month old tiny dog... Actually, the daughter of my chihuahua & minpin.... she weighs 4 lbs and he weighs ALOT. hes mixed with a chow, or something BIG, ..... no probelms there....

you'd be surprised, little dogs can hold their own. but if its a newborn pup youre thinking about getting you may want to supervise more...

do you already have a big dog>?

Re: Is it possible to have two drastically different size dogs?

i know its not really the same but.. when my parents had a golden retriever, i got a kitten. at first i was really nervous to bring her over there because she was so tiny and the dog had never really been around any other puppies or kittens. she was so tiny when i got her that he probably could've swallowed her; he had toys that were bigger than her!

but he didn't. he would curl up next to her and watch out for her and make sure she was okay and not getting into any trouble. he'd even lick her clean. it was really cute.

i think it just depends on the dog. if the bigger dog is a kind natured dog they'd probably get along just fine. at least they did in my experience.

I would have to say that it really depends on the temperment of the larger dog. I have never owned a lab but their reputation is one of a gentle, kind dog. I would only be wary of both of them together as puppies because the lab wont know its own strength.
