We have some college friends who we've never met their SOs since we moved away. Is it okay to put 'and Guest' on the invite? We would invite them with a guest regardless if they are still going out with the person, because they are so far away and I know that they would feel more comfortable with a guest since the travel is 8 hrs. I feel 'and Guest' gives the most freedom for this. Is this okay?
How would we do inner envelopes?

We did pocketfolds so we skipped the inner envelopes. We addressed the outter envelopes with 'Ms. Mary Jones and Guest'
Whether it's 'etiquette' or not...we didn't care...

And guest is not rude it is the correct way. If you don't know there name or don't know who they are bringing.

On the outer envelope, just put your friend's name and address (unless they are engaged, then you should find out the FI's name). On the inner envelope is where you would put & Guest. I think using just '& Guest' is fine, as long as the person isn't married or engaged - in that case you should find out the name.

The inner envelop is supposed to say and Guest not the outer envelop. The outer env. should just read your friends name only. But if you dont want to waste time doing the inner envelops its no biggie to put and guest on the outer. People really dont care that much anyway.

We already ordered inner envelopes. Now I'm getting the guest list ready because we decided to have the invitation place also do the machine calligraphy.

we sent out nearly 300 invitations, we didn't put anything on the inner envelopes, would have been WAY too much work. There were maybe a handful of them we did write on the inner envelope for various reasons. But we put and Guest on the outer envelopes.
I think it's perfectly fine to do that.

Unless they have been dating for a while, then put the guests name. Otherwise and guest is fine.

If you know that they are married or has their SO living with them, I would really try to find out their names, but this is just me. If they are just dating someone, 'and Guest' is fine, but if they were married or in a serious relationship and were living together, I would really try to find out the SOs names, IMO.

Not at all - I was with my ex for almost 6 years, and even though people knew his name, when a cousin or someone got married, it said 'and guest' on it - I won't do it with my close friends, but for those distant-y people, I think its pretty much standard protocol!

I have been reading in a lot of etiquette columns in magazines that you should take the time to find out the persons name that they are brining and address the envelope with both names. I suppose if the person doesn't know who they are taking you can put 'and guest' but 10-12 weeks out if you have friend that doesn't know who they would bring to your wedding, would you really want them there since you probably won't know them anyway.
