is it too much to ask to have a dishwasher in these houses???!!

I am getting so tired with this house hunting.

We've recently re-evaluated our budgets for a few reasons and have been looking at houses within our new budget....it's downright depressing.

We've made comprises with other things we'd love to have but know we can't get them in today's market, and I'm not expecting a brand-new kitchen with granite countertops, but a dishwasher (or even room for one) is not too much to ask in this day and age! I even have one in our apt so i cannot live without one in a house with a baby!!

What kills me is that these houses in there areas we like are still listed as $380-$390K with original bathrooms and kitchens

ETA: The ovens are hysterical too! They're too small to even cook a roast....you can MAYBE get a cookie sheet in lengthwise....so much for any entertaining

sorry sweetie I feel your pain. The market is really high up there. For 390k

Your house is out there chin up

Normally I do think so but with our little one arriving I'm starting to feel under the gun.

Oh and want to hear something funny? When DH opened the oven door and made a comment, the realtors (both ours and the SA) asked me if we planned to entertain, and I said yes, and then one of them goes, oh, forget about cooking, go to Zorn's for your food - it's cheaper and easier!

Some agents KILL me - I know they need to sell the house but please don't LIE about the obvious things with the house that need improvement!

Unless you have a substantial budget you really have to look at houses in the NY Metro area with a different eye. Potential Potential Potential is the key. It's not easy.

No dishwasher is ok just budget one it if its a must have. No room for one is another story. Once we started looking at homes with the 'Potential Mindset' we were in a more realistic place and found our home. Good Luck with your search.

Sorry to hear this Teri, I think it is LI though. My girlfriend upstate had to upgrade many things in her house before her RE agent would even list it. I couldn't believe it. I just saw a show on this very thing this weekend (changing the decor and everything just to SELL the house). Interesting!

Are you still looking in Suffolk as well?

Fran - we've been watching the market for years now and always saw houses with dishwashers - but since the market's at such a high, I guess they're now out of our range.

The problem is we don't have time for major remodeling....we can't remodel the kitchen with a newborn in the house, so whatever we find will have to last for at least a year or so.
If the kitchens had room for dishwashers it would be fine - but there's no room!

One had a portable dishwasher - I hadn't even heard of that til I saw it at this house! I guess we could use that as a last resort but I hear it's a PITA.

Stacey - we're now focusing back on Nassau, which definitely isn't helping with the whole insane factor, but at least DH's commute won't be too bad.

Our house has no dishwasher and you don't want to know what we paid

Teri...we have been looking at places with this mindset...

could we stay here fro 2-5 years...build equity and then move up?

I know moving sucks...and probably will even more with kids...but its a possibility...

yesterday we looked at a place with a dishwasher...but you had to open the oven door to get the dishwashe door to open!!!!

This is exactly why we spent all of last year and a ungodly amount of money remodeling most of our house. Since we don't plan to be here more than 10 years and we want to make sure we can get a decent price for the house, we gutted and remodeled both bathrooms and our kitchen. They were all original to when the house was built in 1954 . And no there was no dishwasher. While we had to give up some cabinet space to put one in, we were able to remodel well enough to get the most out of the space we did have available. I don't know how I lived without it now and I know that we will get the money back out of the house once we do sell.

I wish you luck in your search. I am sure there is something out there.

Teri - I can't believe the houses have no dishwashers!! Our house had no washer and dryer, but the hook-ups were there. We think the lady removed them before putting the house on the market. Talk about PITA - but at least we didn't have to do any remodeling.

I think a dishwasher is essential. As is a good stove. Our kitchen leaves a little to be desired, the appliances are crap, to put it politely. We're looking into already having to replace the electric oven and dishwasher. Sometimes I think it might have been better to buy a house with no appliances, because at least I could get what I wanted! But the price would have to make that worth it.

Good Luck. You'll find something!

Yikes, I guess I am the only one who thinks a dishwasher is useless! I'd rather have another cabinet and do the dishes myself. We run ours maybe once a week, and it seems the dishes are never as clean as if I did em myself!

Our house did come with a new DW, but no fridge or washer/dryer which I was happy about, this way I could buy my own and not have to live with someone else's crusty old washer until it died.

im just laughing when i saw the title... my parents house has no dishwasher, and no dryer... and if they sell it the house would be in the 700's just because of location

To be honest, the more I think about it, the more I will hold my ground and wait for a better house to come along....in this day and age, I really can't imagine living without a dishwasher!!

I don't even care if the house came with one that was crappy or not, just the fact that there's a hook up and space for it in the kitchen would suffice for now!!!

The hunt continues.......

Having the space for a DW is one thing, but I wouldn't let a great house that does not have one be a deal breaker. A decent DW will only cost about $300.

It just sounds like you might need to look at houses in the next price range with bigger kitchens.

I am kind of surprised that houses don't have them. At this point in time I thought they would be standard. But I agree with Kate, I don't think they are difficult to have installed and they aren't too expensive to buy, I wouldn't pass up a house because of this one issue.

Good luck with your search

Exactly - I don't care about buying one ourselves, but there's no where to put it in the few we've seen recently! We'd have to take out half the cabinet space and I'm not joking

The next price range (in these areas) is about $20K more and they're much nicer but, officially out of our range!!

I'm determined to find a house that meets our basic requirements - maybe more will come up soon enough.

They will! Spring is the most popular time of year for home buying /selling!
