FI and I are getting married at Crest Hollow in May 2007. We are about to book Capriccio to do the ceremony music with a string trio. We’ll be doing the Deluxe package, which means that we can request music outside of its standard repertoire.
My question is, should be also book Capriccio for the cocktail hour? It’s an additional $450 for the cocktail hour. We can afford it, but on principle I’d rather not spend it if I don’t have to. (I’m cheap. I admit it.)
I really enjoy classical music, opera, and showtunes, and had already selected some classical art songs to play for the ceremony (and the 30 mins. beforehand). I’m bummed already that we won’t be able to listen to that with b/c I’ll be rehearsing, as our officiant only does rehearsals 30 mins. before the actual ceremony. If we book the cocktail hour, I’d also choose non-standard music to play then.
Weather permitting, the cocktail hour will be poolside. Photos are being taken before the ceremony, so FI and I will be mingling during the cocktail hour—but we’ll be talking to so many people, will we even be able to hear it? If we’re not able to hear it, should we even book for the cocktail hour?
Any advice?

Re: Is it worth it? Cocktail hour
I am obsessed with classical music, i always have been, I was very involved in orchestra in HS. and also went to music camp. I think it will be such an elegant touch to your cocktail hour I plan on doing the same thing for mine. I already have music picked out, that i want to hear!

I think your guests will really notice if you do it. You might be too busy to hear it, but they won't be. I 100% encourage you to do it. $450 for the hour is actually very reasonable.

I really don't think CH music is necessary.
We're going to have it only because it will be included with our band... Otherwise, I wouldn't pay extra for it.

It's a very nice touch and $450 is quite reasonable specially if you can afford it.

I had music playing at my CH, but we did not pay extra for it. Their is a sound system in the CH of my catering hall, so my DJ provided a CD for them to play of songs that FH & I like. I don't know if I would have paid extra for it at the time, but now after the wedding I saw that was a nice touch that people actually did notice. So I am glad that we did have music.

I agree iot's not worth it. People will be discussing your wedding ceremony. Getting drinks eating there willbe enough going on that they won't miss the music for the CH. In addition Crest Hollow is a beautiful venue so not sure what room you have but there will be talk about that as well.

i had strings at my CH. I didn't even hear it from all of the hustle and bustle DH and I underwent.

I'm also getting married at CHCC and I was told by my BM that it was not a great idea to have music during the cocktail hour if it was going to be poolside.
She said that with the sound of the fountains, it is very difficult for the sound to carry very far.
I was debating it too but I went and stood by the fountains and agree that only people standing within a few feet will actually hear the musicians.

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH that's a good point. Those fountains are loud. I think I change my response to no, don't get music.

Ask yourself this, knowing how much you'll enjoy it, will you be attending the cocktail hour?
DH and I said we wanted to, but that didn't work out b/c we wanted pics outside, and took a few minutes to ourselves in the bridal suite, then 'ran' around the CH for 10 min at the most. We paid about the same $ for a steel drum band that we SO wanted, but didn't get to enjoy.

I think it also depends on what kind of mood you want to set. Classical music, while beautiful, can also be a bit formal for a cocktail hour. But maybe you want that. If they are skilled in other areas besides classical, a quartet might be able to do some jazz which would spruce it up a bit.
The FH and I have decided to play more lively music at the cocktail hour, so as to get people in the mood for the party and dancing later.

Re: Is it worth it? Cocktail hour
My wedding was at Crest Hollow, we had music during the cocktail hour everyone noticed and it was lovely! We also had a violinist walking around during the CH playing.
DH and I are Opera and Classical fans, and incorporated so much into our wedding (Ceremony, Reception, etc....) And even our Wedding video.
We used alot of unusual music so our band we hired (for ceremony, ch, reception) had to learn the music we wanted and they did such a bang up wonderful job with it all.
If you can afford it, go for it

I am also getting married at CHCC. I will be having CH music as well. I just feel it brings the elegance of it all. Everyone's preference is different, but it would be real nice. It also depends on the sound system your entertainment company carries. I am paying only $200 so for $450, it better be good...
