My fiance and I booked, planned and are sending out our own invitations. Our parents are helping a little with the cost and that's about it :)

I think etiquette says you can't host your own engagement party but some etiquette is WAY outdated and doesn't apply. We held, hosted and paid for our entire party and not one person thought it was weird.

I don't think so! We booked our engagement party ourselves. We bought the invitations, favors, and decorations. Our parents paid for the actual party but everything else was done by us. I think it is pretty common nowadays because we are so eager and excited to plan a wedding that these events we want to be a part of ( or at least so i think) :)

While our parents are helping us with wedding costs, we decided to plan and throw our own engagement party. We weren't fielding for gifts or anything, we were just so happy and excited that we wanted to share that excitement with all of our friends and family together, especially the people we hadn't had a chance to celebrate with by that point.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with it, we signed our invitation 'The Happy Couple', and left out registry cards. If people ask, that's the appropriate time to tell them where you are registered.

Our engagement party went better than we ever could have expected, we had a wonderful time. If you want to see pics of what we did, or info about our place, FM me, I'll get you in touch with the Manager. I work in the restaurant industry, so maybe I could help work them with your budget.

Re: is it wrong to

I don't see why not - we planned ours. I did the same thing with registering. I didn't even want to register right away because we don't know where we're going to live yet, but my mom said that there are people that prefer to give an actual gift, so it's easier if they can get you something you need.
